What You’ll Need

  • Rice Krispie cereal
  • Salted butter
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Orange food coloring
  • Pretzel rods
  • Green airheads
ingredients

How to Make Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats

Make the Rice Krispies: Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the marshmallows and stir. Once it starts to melt, add food coloring until it is the color you want it to be. Keep stirring until it is completely melted. Add the Rice Krispies to the marshmallow mixture and fold it in until it is all coated. Let it cool slightly.

Make the pumpkins: Lay down parchment paper and coat your hands in non-stick cooking spray. Form balls of rice krispies and shape them into pumpkin shapes. Use a finger to dent the top where the pretzel rod goes. Add the pretzel in the middle of the top of the pumpkin. Add a little leaf made from the Airhead. Don’t forget the curly stem. Let the pumpkins cool completely.

Want to Use a Microwave

If you would rather use a microwave instead of melting the marshmallows on the stove, it’s easy to do. Melt butter and mini marshmallows on high for 2 minutes in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir and then heat for 1 more minute until smooth. Follow the next steps as listed.

Variations

There are so many different ways make these Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats. If you don’t have one of the ingredients that’s ok. You can get creative. You can also get creative with flavors and other ideas.

  1. Don’t have green Airheads? That’s ok. You can use green fondant or green candies, like green M&M instead.
  2. Instead of pretzels rods, you can use Rolos or tootsie roll stems.
  3. To add additional flavors to the pumpkins, you can use pumpkin pie spice marshmallows or other flavored marshmallows. Can’t find pumpkin spice marshmallows? That’s ok. Add a teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger.
  4. Make stuffed pumpkins. Add a bite size candy bar inside of the pumpkin. Place the candy bar inside the rice krispie treats and wrap the cereal around it. When everyone eats the treat, there will be a special treat inside. Some delicious candy ideas are: Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, Snickers, Twix (cut in half), Crunch, and Butterfinger.

Instructions

  • In a large non stick pan, melt the butter on low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir. Once slightly melted begin adding as much food coloring till you get the desired color you’d like.
  • Make sure to keep stirring. Once completely melted turn off the heat and add in the Rice Krispie cereal one cup at a time and stir after every cup. Stir and fold until everything is well mixed and coated. Let cool slightly.
  • Lay down a sheet of parchment paper. Coat hands with cooking spray and grab chunks of the rice krispie and form into balls ( i made small, medium and large ones, large being slightly smaller than an apple.)
  • Once the balls are formed, press down on the top and bottom of the ball to make a pumpkin shape. You can use a finger to make a dent where the pretzel rod goes or you can just push it in. Place them on the parchment paper.
  • Place the pretzel into the middle of the top of the pumpkin. Using scissors, cut little leaf shapes out of the airheads (the corners worked best.) Cut along the long part of the airhead very thinly, roll out into a small rope. Wrap it around something thin like a skewer stick to make a twisty vine.
