Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls

It’s hard to believe that these homemade dinner rolls take just 30 minutes to make, including both prep and baking time. They’re super soft and fluffy, just like the ones that take hours to bake, and taste so much better than the ones you’d buy at the store.

I love this recipe for the holidays because the rolls hardly take up any oven time and can easily be prepped around the other dishes. But it’s also the perfect recipe for us busy moms any other time too, like with a big bowl of soup on those chilly nights.

What You’ll Need

These 30 minute dinner rolls are made with yeast, bread flour, and just a few pantry staples. Be sure to check the recipe card below for the measurements.

  • Warm water – For these easy dinner rolls, you want warm water – not cold or hot. Hot water will kill the yeast so the rolls do not rise.
  • Vegetable oil – Helps keep the rolls moist and adds a rich flavor.
  • Active dry yeast – The key ingredient in making these rolls rise. Be sure the yeast is not expired.
  • Sugar – Sweetens the rolls and gives the yeast something to “eat”.
  • Egg
  • Bread flour – Bread flour is key to the soft texture of the rolls.

How to Make 30 Minute Dinner Rolls

Here’s how to make these easy dinner rolls in just a few steps.

  • Prepare the yeast. Combine the warm water, oil, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let rest for 5-10 minutes.
  • Make the dough. Mix in the salt, egg, and two cups of flour until combined. Add the remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time. Shape the dough into 12 even pieces.
  • Let rise. Place the dough pieces on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Let rise for 10 minutes.
  • Bake. Bake for 10 minutes, until the tops are lightly golden. Brush with melted butter.

Tips for Success

Here are a few tips for making homemade dinner rolls.

  • Make sure the yeast is good. The yeast is the key to these dinner rolls. If it’s expired or otherwise defective, you’ll want to throw it out and get new yeast before continuing with the recipe.
  • Spray your hands with cooking spray. Dinner roll dough is very sticky, so I recommend spraying your hands with cooking spray while you’re shaping it so that doesn’t stick to your hand.
  • Do not overmix. Overmixing the dough can lead to dense rolls, so be sure to mix only until the ingredients are combined.
  • Why are my dinner rolls hard? There are two reasons this can happen – either you added too much flour or the dough was overmixed. Be sure to measure the flour accurately and mix only as much as necessary.

What to Serve With Homemade Dinner Rolls

This simple dinner rolls are the perfect side for your holiday meal, next to your turkey or ham. They’re perfect for soaking up every bite of gravy or sauce from green bean casserole left on your plate.

Truly all you need to serve these is some butter but if you want to take them to the next level, try adding some cinnamon honey butter. It adds just the perfect amount of sweetness.

Besides the holidays, these are perfect with a steaming bowl of soup, whether it’s creamy ham potato soup or chili lime chicken soup.

Leftovers the next day are great with butter and jelly too!

How to Store

Leftover homemade dinner rolls should be stored in a ziploc bag on the counter. They’re best enjoyed within a day but will stay good for 3 days or so. I like to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to warm them up before serving.

Can I Freeze These?

Yes, you can freeze both the baked and unbaked dinner rolls. To freeze the baked dinner rolls, simply let them cool and then place in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge then pop in the oven to reheat. I recommend wrapping them in foil to prevent them from overcooking.

To thaw the dough, form the rolls and allow them to rise as usual, and place on a baking sheet. Cover with foil and flash freeze. Once frozen, transfer to an air tight container for up to 3 months. Thaw on a baking sheet then bake as usual. This is perfect for when you only need one or two rolls!
