Talk about a fun drink for 4th of July, this American Margarita is it. It’s a celebration in a glass with a bonus… it’s delicious!

Do you love a really good margarita? They scream summer, although I won’t tell if you love them all year round. This Skinny Cantaloupe Margarita is to die for. Fresh cantaloupe chunks with a nice orange-flavored liqueur create a drink that’s both fruity and sweet. Not a fan of cantaloupe? Maybe you’ll like a Sunrise Margarita instead. It’s loaded with orange juice, pineapple juice, and lime juice.

American Margarita

For this drink, you’ll need tequila, watermelon liqueur, Blue Curacao, Big Red soda, and cherry grenadine.

Yes, I said Big Red soda. The drink you probably begged for when you were a kid and no one hears a thing about anymore. Or do you? Is that a drink you sometimes buy?

Want to try making your own liqueur?

Sometimes some of us get wild and crazy and decide to make a liqueur at home. It sounds like it might be a pretty fancy and involved thing to do, but it isn’t.

If you’ve got a few days and you want to make it, all you need is a good vodka about 2 cups of fruit, 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water.

Drop your chopped fruit (in this case, watermelon) into a mason jar and cover with vodka. Seal it up tightly, move it away from light and let it sit for 3 days.

Strain the liquid to remove the fruit. It’s a good idea to use cheesecloth to really, thoroughly extract all those good juices.

Cook your sugar and water until the sugar is dissolved. Let it cool completely. Add it to the vodka infusion you made and let it sit for at least a day, longer if you can. It will keep in the fridge for several months.

Some people go ahead and extract the juice from the melon and cook it with the sugar and water. If you do it that way, be sure you don’t add the vodka while it’s hot. You can cook the alcohol right out of it!
