There is a new nursing assistant device that will finally allow a hands-on Dad to breastfeed the baby for Mom.

It’s called the Father’s Nursing Assistant and it was created by Dentsu, a Japanese company that debuted the invention at SXSW (South by Southwest) this year.

Everyone is talking about it!

Now You Can Buy a Tool That Lets Dad Breastfeed the Baby

Hey Dad, Breastfeed the Baby

“Based on advice from pediatricians and babysitters, who say that babies tend to touch the breast with their hands when feeding and that the softness seems to sooth them, the product has been shaped to resemble a woman’s breasts.”  – Dentsu Website

There is a tank on one side for the milk and the other has the breastfeeding system. It also links to an app that tracks the baby’s breastfeeding and sleeping time.

Reasons the Father’s Nursing Assistant might be a good idea.

Moms might get some more sleep. Imagine it’s 2 AM and you haven’t slept in what feels like a week. How awesome would it be for your husband (or anyone you choose) to take over with the baby?

This invention wants to bridge the gap between Dad’s ability to bond during feeding and Mom’s natural bonding during breastfeeding.

What you need to know:

The device is white and is shaped like a woman’s breasts. There aren’t a lot of photos of it online yet, but from what I’ve seen, it looks very cumbersome.

It reminds me a little of a flotation device with a large nipple on one side.

(Take a look at some of the photos on Instagram to see the device for yourself. While you’re there, come follow KitchenFunWithMy3Sons!)

It’s not for sale yet. I’m not sure whether they are still searching for funding, or whether they are trying to gauge the interest in a unique product like this one.

It’ll be interesting to see if it’s ever actually for sale and if it is, whether guys will use it.

Attention Nursing Moms

How does this idea sound to you? Would you consider it as another way to involve your partner in feeding the baby?

The company says the “breasts” are shaped like, and as soft as, a woman’s breasts. I’m personally wondering about the warmth. It seems to me it would be difficult to keep the milk warmed appropriately.

As a mom who nurses, you know how important that skin to skin contact is for baby. I suppose this would allow for that with Dad.

Although, I have to admit I still think there are lots of other, easier ways for men to have meaningful physical contact with their babies that don’t involve a contraption strapped to your chest.

What’s the verdict?

Are you in or out? I’ll just say it… for me, it’s a no.

I’m not sure I’m buying the idea that wearing fake boobs with a nipple sewn into them is the answer civilization is waiting for when it comes to men bonding with their kids.

As long as there is a breast pump, we’re all set. I’m more a fan of, “Hey, I pumped and now I have to sleep so grab a bottle and don’t wake me up because it’s your night to be the parent on call.”

That’s reasonable, right? What do you say?
