There are some great OTC solutions for allergy sufferers, but there are also some interesting natural treatments you may want to try.

12 Natural Allergy Remedies Not a Lot of People Know

Natural Allergy Remedies

As I always say, I’m not a doctor, and I can’t personally promise that all of these remedies work. Please don’t take these at face value. If you have questions, talk to your doc.

1. Honey from local bees. Some folks say that when you eat local honey, not the kind in a grocery store, you are consuming local pollen from your neighborhood bees.

The idea is that over time people who eat this honey will become less sensitive to those particular pollens. (NEVER give honey to children under 1.)

2. Probiotics. Known for balancing good bacteria in our digestive system, you can get them naturally in yogurt and sourdough. They might help with inflammation in your sinus cavity.

3. Butterbur. This is a plant from Europe and Asia that’s been used for medicinal purposes for a very long time. It’s typically used for migraine relief but is gaining popularity as a way to fight allergies.

It’s super important that you use only PA-free butterbur. You can find it online in capsule form.

4. Nasal Irrigation. People who use a Neti Pot say they’ll never go back. Clean out pollen and irritants in your nasal cavity by using one according to the directions.

5. Fish Oil. We know that the Omega-3 Fatty Acids in a fish oil capsule helps with inflammation, reduces the risk of asthma, and is good for our brains.

It’s exciting that researchers now say that fish oil can be very helpful in the prevention and treatment of allergy symptoms as well.

6. Ginger Tea. Similar to some of the other natural allergy remedies, ginger is an anti-inflammatory that can help minimize the effects of allergies.

7. Bromelain. Most commonly found in pineapple, it is said to help with inflammation caused by pollen allergies.

8. Spirulina. The Blue-Green algae Spirulina has a reputation as a “superfood,” and is gaining a following of people who say it’s really helping their allergies.

You can buy it in powder form and make some incredible green smoothies. Bonus: it’s 60% to 70% pure protein.

9. Washing Machine. Shed your clothes immediately after being outside and put them in the washer. Getting the pollen off your clothes is a smart habit to get into if you suffer from seasonal allergies.

10. Water. The power of drinking water never ceases to amaze me.  In addition to all the health benefits of drinking water, you can count on it to ease the headaches caused by allergies.

11. Make a hot and spicy meal. We’ve all had the experience of eating spicy food and being hit with a runny nose and watery eyes.

Onions, garlic, and cayenne pepper all have loads of naturally occurring chemical compounds in them that will thin your mucus. You won’t feel so stuffed up.

12. Finally, take a hot bath. Steam helps get rid of congestion. (Not to mention, everything feels better after a nice bath.)
