Ingredients You Will Need

  • Olive oil
  • Onion
  • Green bell pepper
  • Lean ground beef
  • Ketchup
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Taco seasoning – use store bought or homemade
  • Cornstarch
  • Low sodium chicken broth
  • Provolone cheese – use cheese sliced for sandwiches
  • Large hamburger buns – we love the sesame seed buns!

How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

To begin, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, then add the onions and bell peppers; sauté until softened. Crumble in the ground beef and cook until completely browned.

Now add the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and taco seasoning and mix well.

In a small bowl, combine the chicken broth and the cornstarch and whisk well. Pour the mixture into the meat and stir well. Allow the meat to simmer over medium heat as the sauce thickens.

For easy clean up, line a large baking sheet with foil. Place just the bottom halves of the hamburger buns in a single layer on the baking sheet. Scoop the meat onto the buns. I used a slotted spoon to drain off some of the excess juice so the bottom buns wouldn’t end up soaked.

Making Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

Top each sandwich with 1-2 slices of provolone cheese per sandwich. We used two slices, of course!

Topping sloppy joes with provolone cheese

Place the tray of sandwiches under the broiler in your oven and set to broil. You’ll want to broil just long enough for the cheese to melt, which takes about 2-4 minutes.

Top the sandwiches with the top buns and enjoy!

The sandwiches will be a bit hot since they’ve just been broiled, so you’ll want to use a spatula to place them on plates.

As mentioned above, you can use just one slice of provolone per sandwich, which will be delicious. But for a more cheesy experience, load them up with two slices each!

Can I Leave Out the Onions and Peppers?

Yes, you can certainly skip that step. However, they really do add so much flavor! If some in your family want the onions and peppers while others do not, just remove them from the pan before you cook the meat. Then, add the onions and peppers to the sandwiches right under the cheese before you broil.

Can I use Mozzarella Cheese Instead of Provolone?

Yes, mozzarella is a great substitute for the provolone cheese. Just be sure you use deli-style cheese slices meant for sandwiches. They’re just perfect for melting evenly and quickly over the meat.

I found the provolone cheese slices in the regular cheese aisle in the grocery store, but you will also find it at the deli counter where it can be sliced to order for you.
