Pizza For Breakfast Is Healthier Than Cereal, Nutritionist Claims

Pizza for breakfast. Not a new concept. Now you can give yourself permission to say yes to the kids when they ask to eat leftover pizza for breakfast.

It seems we all get trapped in food cycles and they’re really hard to get out of. I’ll bet you have a handful of recipes you use again and again. As a society, we see the three daily meals as having hard and fast rules as to what is and is not good to eat depending upon the time of day. I’m here to tell you we can lose some of those rules about breakfast and let our kids enjoy something besides cereal.

Pizza for Breakfast

Pizza for Breakfast Is a Big Yes

It’s time to shake up breakfast so we can move beyond sugary cereal. Cinnamon Toast Crunch, for example, has around 10 grams of sugar and 200 calories and that’s for a small 3/4 cup serving! (That 10 grams is less than some others. We’re looking at you, Cap’n Crunch and Honey Smacks.)

According to a nutritionist Chelsey Amer, most breakfast cereals are far too high in sugar to be good for you.

1. Leftover pizza. Yum, yum, yum! If pizza is good the first time, it’s great when you pull a slice from the refrigerator the next morning.

“You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories,” Chelsey Amer, MS, RDN, CDN to The Daily Meal. “However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning.”

2. How about a morning salad? I know, I know. Your kids may revolt and tie you to a chair if you were to even try to feed them a salad, especially in the morning. But, if your kiddo loves salads of any sort (a salad can be a mix of all sorts of veggies and dressings) let them have one for breakfast.

3. The long smoothie. You can make smoothies with practically anything you want in them. They don’t have to be loaded with any one ingredient. Find some combinations that your kids will love, cut up the ingredients and freeze them so you can whip up one in a hurry.

“A smoothie that is all fruit is an unbalanced mini-meal,” Anna Taylor, MS, RD, LD. “Grab a big handful of greens, rinse, and add to your smoothie to ensure you’re not missing out on key nutrients.”

4. Soup will work. Potato soup might be a great one for breakfast. Make it a loaded baked potato soup by adding some bacon. If your kiddos love soup, why say no just because it’s 7 AM?

5. A good old sandwich. A ham sandwich with cheese for breakfast sounds great. If your kid loves to eat sandwiches at any other time of the day, maybe they’ll love them for breakfast, too. (I’m thinking about grilled cheese right now and I might have to go make one before I finish this post!)

6. Leftover Fried Rice. Throw an egg in a frying pan and mix it with some wonderful fried rice from the Chinese last night. Pork rice especially. A nice tummy-filler.

What are your best ideas for breakfast that’s a little outside what we are used to?
