Snow Mitten Sugar Cookies

How adorable are these snow mitten sugar cookies? I love that they actually look like they have snow on them!

We usually stick with stockings and trees for our Christmas sugar cookies and I’m excited to give these mittens a try.

Snow Mitten Sugar Cookies

Snow Mitten Sugar Cookies

makes 24 cookies

Cookie Ingredients: 

  • 1 C of butter
  • 1 1/2 C Powder sugar
  • 1tsp vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 3 C of flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tarter
  • Cookie cutter: mitten

Icing Ingredients:

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 C cream of tarter
  • 1/2 C vanilla
  • 4 1/2 C powder sugar
  • teal, red and green gel color
  • 1 container of white sanding sugar
  • 4 disposable piping bags fitted with number 2 tip
  • 3 squeeze bottles

Snow Mitten Sugar Cookies

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside
  3. Using a standing mixer, cream together the butter, powder sugar, vanilla and egg and mix until combined and creamy
  4. Using a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and cream of tarter
  5. Gradually add in the dry ingredients and mix on low speed
  6. Using your hands continue to mix until fully combined
  7. Lightly flour a cutting board and knead the cookie dough a couple of times
  8. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick
  9. Cut out a few mittens and place onto the cookie sheet
  10. Bake for 8 minutes or until lightly golden brown
  11. Repeat steps until completely out of dough
  12. Let cookies cool completely

Snow Mitten Sugar Cookies

To ice the cookies:

  1. Using the standing mixer, combine the egg whites, cream of tarter, vanilla and powder sugar and mix until combined and stiff peaks form
  2. Split the icing into 4 bowls
  3. Add in a few drops of teal into one bowl and mix until combined
  4. Add in a few drops of red into the second bowl and mix until combined
  5. Add in a few drops of green into the third bowl and mix until combined
  6. Leave the fourth bowl white
  7. Scoop a small amount of frosting into the piping bags
  8. With what is remaining in the icing bags, add in a few tablespoons (about 2) of water into the bowls and mix until combined
  9. Pour the thinned icing into the squeeze bottles and set aside
  10. Using the teal piping bag, pipe an outline around the top half, leaving the bottom bare for the white on the mitten
  11. Fill in with the thinned teal icing
  12. Repeat steps with remaining red and green colors onto the other cookies.
  13. Let cookies dry overnight
  14. Using the white icing piping bag, pipe a outline around the bottom part of the mitten and fill in with the thinned icing
  15. Pour the sprinkles onto a plate
  16. Dip the white part of the mitten into the sprinkles and set aside
  17. Repeat steps on remaining cookies
  18. Let cookies dry for an hour
  19. Using the white icing, pipe a snowflake onto the middle of the mitten
  20. Dip into the sprinkles
  21. Repeat steps with remaining cookies
  22. Choose one of the three colors to pipe a strip across the lower part of the mitten
  23. Let cookies dry for another hour before enjoying you Snow Mitten Sugar Cookies!
