Apple Bread Pudding Recipe

When the air turns nippy and the leaves start to turn, everyone makes a mad dash to buy pumpkin spice. No judgment here! I’d put pumpkin spice flavor in just about anything. But allow me to advocate for apple pie spice. It’s every bit as good as pumpkin spice and certainly as versatile. We’ll show you how to make your own in this recipe.

The next time you’re shopping, grab a bag of apples and a can or two of apple pie filling. They’ll come in handy when you’re whipping up all sorts of apple recipes. For example, take a peek at our Caramel Apple Crisps Cups, Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars, Caramel Apple Dump Cake or Slow Cooker Applesauce.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • French bread- stale or day-old bread works best for bread pudding recipes as it absorbs the egg-mixture better.
  • Apples- we used Gala apples but Granny Smith apples will work as well.
  • Butter- you can use salted or unsalted for this recipe since no other salt is added.
  • Flour- you will need all-purpose flour.
  • Apple pie spice- you can use store-bought or make your own with instructions below.
  • Sugar- brown sugar adds the sweetness to this bread pudding.
  • Eggs- you’ll need large eggs.
  • Milk- whole milk will work best.
  • Vanilla- pure vanilla extract gives the best results.
  • Cinnamon- ground cinnamon always

  • Begin whisking while adding the flour to the melted butter. Slowly add the brown sugar gently whisking to blend the butter, flour, and the brown sugar together.
  • Slowly add the diced apples, apple pie spice and water, stir and cover.
  • Continue to cook over medium low heat until the apples are soft.
  • Remove from the heat. Strain through a strainer, reserving the hot juice from the apples.
  • Cute the stale bread and add the bread cubes to the baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted butter, vanilla, brown sugar, apple pie spice, and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl.
  • Pour this mixture over the top of the apples and bread. Using your hands press down on the bread very lightly. Transfer to the oven.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
  • Pour the reserved cooked apple juice caramel sauce all over the top of the bread pudding.

Caramel Apple Bread Pudding Tips

  • You need stale bread for this recipe. Stale bread will soak up the the custard (egg mixture) better than fresh bread. To make stale bread, cut it up into cubes and let it sit out overnight. You should be good to go the next day!
  • Serve the bread pudding warm. You can add a dollop of fresh whipped cream of a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • We store the leftovers covered in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Then as you want you can heat up the bread pudding adding toppings as you wish.
  • Looking to add some crunch? Try adding chopped pecans or walnuts to this bread pudding.

Apple Pie Spice

If you’re feeling ambitious, go ahead and make your own apple pie spice to use in this recipe and throughout the season. You only need a few ingredients!

  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon allspice

      1. Please clarify how many apples to use. Recipe says a bag 3/4 lb gala apples. A bag of apples weighs more than 3/4 lb. Should it be 3-4 lbs?
