Ingredients

  • 2 pound extra lean ground beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 green bell pepper diced
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper to taste
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese at room temperature

Instructions

  • In a large pot or skillet, cook the ground beef, diced onion, and diced bell peppers over medium heat until the meat is fully browned, stirring often and breaking the meat up into small pieces. Drain off all of the excess fat.
  • Add the minced garlic to the ground beef mixture in the pot and cook over medium heat for 1 minute. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper and sir well. Next, add the chicken broth and ketchup, stirring until combined.
  • Simmer the slobby joe mixture uncovered over low to medium heat until thickened, about 30 minutes.
  • Pour the dip into a serving dish and sprinkle with finely shredded cheddar cheese and allow the cheese to melt on top of the hot dip.
  • Serve the dip hot with chips or slices of a French baguette for dipping.
