This homemade Chex Mix recipe is the ultimate after school snack. You can make it in your slow cooker or in the oven, and the end result is an irresistibly crunchy snack that everyone loves!

Why You’ll Love It
- Easy to make. Just add everything to your slow cooker, or spread it on a baking sheet if you’re using your oven. Then mix up the sauce, pour it over everything, and bake!
- Crunchy, salty & cheesy. I love the combination of flavors and textures in this snack. It’s hard to just have one handful.
- Can be made ahead. This recipe makes a generous amount of Chex Mix. I like storing mine in separate little sandwich bags so that anyone can grab a bag and dig in when they need a snack.
Key Ingredients You’ll Need
- Cereal: You will need two types of Chex cereal, rice, and wheat.
- Crackers: I like to add cheese and oyster crackers into the mix.
- Pretzels: I like salty flavors along with savory flavors using pretzels.
- Nuts: I also add mixed nuts for more salty and nutty flavors.
- Sauce: This is a mix of butter, Worcestershire sauce, cajun seasoning, garlic powder & dried onion.
How To Make Chex Mix
Let’s take a quick look at how to make Chex Mix. I’m providing information on how to do it two ways: in your slow cooker or in your oven.
Slow Cooker Method
- Combine the mix ingredients. Place all your mix ingredients in the bowl of of your slow cooker.
- Make the sauce. Melt the butter, then add the other sauce ingredients. Mix well.
- Add the sauce. Pour the sauce over your mix, then stir everything together.
- Cook. Put the lid on and cook for 2 hours on high heat. Mix the ingredients every 20 minutes. Pour the cooked mixture onto a large baking sheet or tray evenly.
- Cool. Allow the mix to sit for 5-10 minutes to cool before serving.
Making Chex Mix in the Oven
You can also make this recipe in the oven. Here’s how to do it:
- Prep your tools. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Preheat your oven to 250F.
- Combine the mix ingredients. Place all your mix ingredients on the sheet and mix. Spread it out.
- Make and add the sauce. Make the sauce, then pour over the Chex mix ingredients and mix well.
- Bake. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes. Make sure to stir every 15 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes before enjoying it.
How To Store
Let your Chex Mix cool completely, then store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. I like to divide it among small sandwich-sized baggies so that anyone can grab some on their way out the door.
Variations:
- Onion powder: If you don’t have dried onion, you can use onion powder instead.
- Different mix ingredients: You can swap the crackers or cereals with goldfish, Fritos, or cheerios.
- Not a fan of nuts? You can just leave them out and add in an equal amount of crackers, chips or cereal.
Tips & Tricks
- Oven method is faster: If you find that you want the recipe done faster, you can use the baking method. This will also help with anyone that doesn’t have a slow cooker and prefers baking instead.
- Keep an eye on your mix: Make sure to mix every 15 to 20 minutes to keep the mix from sticking together and burning.

Did I miss it or did you never say what temp to bake it at if you use the oven?
Bake at 250. Stir occasionally and remove when golden.
