French Onion Slow Cooker Chicken

You can just add all your ingredients into the slow cooker and sit back and watch it cook away. It comes out full of flavor and so tender. When it’s all cooked and ready to go, I love topping it with a bunch of Swiss or Mozzarella cheese! I love turning this recipe into sandwiches that can then be dipped back into the soup in the slow cooker. It is a recipe that will have you coming back for more every time you make it.

Key Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Chicken: I like to use boneless skinless chicken for this recipe.
  • Onion: You will need onion, onion soup mix, French onion soup, and French fried onions.
  • Swiss Cheese: I like to use this or Mozzarella cheese.

How To Make Crockpot French Onion Chicken

  • Add ingredients to slow cooker. Use cooking spray to grease an 8-qt slow cooker. Put in the chicken, sliced onions, soup mix, and condensed soup.

  • Cook the chicken. Combine the ingredients before covering them with a lid. Cook for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low. Add the fried onions and slice of cheese to each chicken breast 30 minutes prior to being done. Once cooked, sprinkle some parsley on top. Enjoy!

I love serving this chicken recipe over rice, potatoes, or on sandwiches! This is a great way to have a tasty and hearty meal for dinner. You can also serve it by itself with bread, a side salad, or veggies.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make Ahead of Time: You can prep crockpot French onion chicken in advance for a quick freezer meal. Place all the ingredients (except the cheese) into a freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to three months. When ready to use, thaw the bag in the fridge for a day before you plan to make it. Then, when you’re ready to cook, empty the bag into your crockpot and proceed with directions.
  • Place leftovers in an airtight container for the best storage method.
  • You can use liners for the slow cooker to reduce mess.
  • This can be left in the fridge for up to 3 days.

  • 2 lb. chicken breast boneless skinless
  • 1 cup onion sliced
  • 10.5 oz can condensed French onion soup
  • 1 oz onion soup mix
  • 2-3 slices Swiss cheese sliced
  • French fried onions optional
  • Parsley optional


  • Spray the inside of an 8-quart slow cooker. Add the chicken breasts, the sliced onions, the soup mix, and the condensed soup.
  • Slightly stir and cover and cook on high for 4 hours, or on low for 6. 30 minutes before done, sprinkle the fried onions (optional) and add one slice of Swiss cheese to each chicken breast. Once done you can add cut parsley over top too. (optional).

    My husband loves French onion soup and this sounds wonderful…problem is we are now on a 2000mg of salt daily. Do you have any suggestions of how to keep the flavor but use a lot less salt items besides the onion soup mix..I do use less salt or salt free broth..

    1. Hi Peggy. In looking at the nutritional info, it seems like the sodium estimation is a bit high and this would all depend on what low sodium products you could use. A low sodium soup and maybe using some onion powder instead on the mix may get you where you want to be when divided by the number of servings.
