This creamy chicken noodle soup is a yummy twist on classic homemade chicken noodle soup. Heavy cream adds richness and creaminess, while the vegetables add texture and depth without any extra effort. Cooking everything together allows the flavors to meld perfectly. Pre-cooked shredded chicken (or a rotiserrie chicken) help keep it quick and easy. This is one of my family’s all-time favorite soup recipes!

Why This Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup Is A Family Favorite

  • One pot dinner. This entire soup is cooked entirely in one pot. That makes cleanup a breeze! Plus, with chicken, noodles, and vegetables, it makes a complete meal with no sides or extras needed.
  • Creamy broth. What sets this recipe apart from other chicken noodle soups is the addition of heavy whipping cream to the broth. It adds a creamy texture and flavor that my family loves.
  • Reheats well. This creamy chicken noodle soup makes fantastic leftovers. It’s ideal to make for dinner and enjoy for lunch throughout the week. That said, it doesn’t freeze well, due to the dairy and the noodles.

Recipe Ingredients

Here’s an overview of each ingredient needed to make this soup. Scroll down to the recipe card below for the exact measurements.

  • Veggies – Celery, carrots, and onion.
  • Butter – I recommend unsalted butter since the broth and bouillon can be salty.
  • Garlic
  • All-purpose flour – Only use as much as needed, the exact amount may vary.
  • Chicken broth – Since we’re using 6 cups, I highly recommend low-sodium broth.
  • Better than Bouillon – Enhances the chicken flavor in the broth.
  • Spices – Black pepper, salt, oregano, thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder season the soup.
  • Egg noodles – Uncooked, they will cook in the soup.
  • Shredded chicken – This is a great recipe for rotisserie chicken. Canned chicken or cooked and shredded chicken breast also work.
  • Heavy whipping cream – Bring it to room temperature so that it doesn’t curdle when added to the hot broth.
  • Fresh parsley – I like to add fresh parsley for a final pop of color and flavor at the end.

How To Make Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup

This soup is surprisingly quick to make, ready in just 35 minutes. The printable instructions can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Saute the veggies. Cook the celery, carrots, onion, and butter over medium heat for 7 minutes, until the onions are translucent. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Add the flour. Stir in the flour, cooking and stirring for 3 minutes. For a thinner soup, add 1/4 cup of flour. For a thicker soup, add 1/2 cup of flour.
  • Cook the noodles. Add the broth and seasoning. Bring to a boil then add the noodles. Cook for 5 minutes.
  • Simmer. Stir in the chicken and heavy whipping cream. Simmer until the chicken is heated through.
  • Add salt. Give the soup a taste. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt as needed.
  • Enjoy. Top with parsley and serve.

Tips & Variations

Here are a few ways to customize this creamy chicken noodle soup.

  • Add some parmesan. Shredded parmesan cheese makes a wonderful final touch to the soup, adding a salty and nutty flavor.
  • Make ahead. Feel free to make this creamy chicken noodle soup in advance. However, I recommend cooking the egg noodles separately and adding them just before serving.
  • Add some veggies. Stir a bag of mixed vegetables into the soup along with the chicken to sneak in some extra veggies.
  • Noodle alternatives. Replace the egg noodles with a cup of uncooked rice or pasta as desired, if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Use fresh herbs. Fresh herbs can easily be used in place of the dried ones if you have them on hand.

How To Store & Reheat Leftovers

  • Fridge. Store leftover creamy chicken noodle soup in the fridge for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing as the noodles are very soft once defrosted.
  • Reheat. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated there. You may need to add a bit more broth, as the noodles continue to absorb the liquid and thicken the soup while refrigerated.
