This Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole is the perfect hands-off side dish for the holidays! Made with just a few ingredients, it takes just a couple of minutes of prep. So easy!

This slow cooker green bean casserole is a twist on classic green bean casserole. The ingredients list is similar, with the addition of half and half for extra sauce to cook in. I also use frozen green beans instead of canned, so that they stay a bit more firm.
The best part is that this is a dump-and-go recipe, so you can toss everything in the crockpot and free up oven and stovetop space to make other holiday favorites, like Christmas turkey crown and mashed potatoes.
Why I Love This Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole
- Hands-off. This recipe is as simple as combining the sauce ingredients and dumping them over green beans in the crockpot. Other than a couple of minutes at the beginning and end, this recipe is completely hands-off.
- Great for holidays. Because it can be cooked in the slow cooker while you do everything else, this recipe is perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s one less thing to put in the oven!
- Short ingredients list. This slow cooker green bean casserole is made with just 5 main ingredients, plus salt, pepper, and garlic. They’re all common ingredients, too!

Ingredient Notes
Here’s an overview of the handful of ingredients needed to make this side dish, along with any substitutions. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for the exact measurements.
- Green beans – I use thawed frozen whole green beans. Canned green beans work but the end result will be much softer.
- Cream of mushroom soup – If you don’t like mushrooms, swap for canned cream of chicken or cream of celery soup.
- Half and half – I like half and half because it keeps the cream sauce pretty thick. If you want a thinner sauce, use whole milk.
- Parmesan cheese – Adds a bit of saltiness and cheesy texture. Shredded cheddar also works.
- Garlic – Freshly minced is ideal.
- Salt & pepper
- French fried onions – Adds the classic crunch to the casserole.
How To Make Green Bean Casserole in the Slow Cooker
This recipe takes just a few minutes of hands-on prep, then the slow cooker does the rest. The printable instructions can be found in the recipe card below.

- Make the sauce. Combine the condensed soup, half and half, parmesan, garlic, seasonings, and half of the fried onions in a bowl.
- Assemble. Add the thawed green beans to the slow cooker. Add the sauce mixture on top. Stir to coat the green beans and spread in an even layer.

- Cook. Place the lid on top. Cook on low for 3-4 hours or on high for 2 hours, until the beans are tender.
- Enjoy. Give the casserole a stir, then sprinkle with the remaining fried onions. Enjoy.

Recipe Tips & Variations
Here are some of my best tips and favorite variations for this slow cooker green bean casserole recipe.
- Add a protein. Chopped bacon, shredded chicken, or shredded turkey can be added to the mixture to make it more filling.
- Stir in mushrooms. Sliced mushrooms are also a popular addition.
- Make more sauce if necessary. Keep in mind that if you add too many extra mix-ins, you may need to make more cream sauce to coat everything.
- Serve immediately. I recommend serving this crockpot green bean casserole immediately because the sauce will reduce the longer it sits.
- Use thawed beans. Frozen green beans are convenient and easy for this recipe, but you should thaw them first.
Serving Suggestions
Slow cooker green bean casserole is a holiday staple. It goes so well as part of a spread with Christmas ham or Thanksgiving turkey breast and other sides like sweet potato casserole and baked mac and cheese.
We’ve also enjoyed this throughout the year with mains like air fryer steak and fried pork chops.

How To Store & Reheat Leftovers
- Fridge: As noted above, I do recommend serving this slow cooker green bean casserole immediately. However, leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days. Just note that the sauce will thicken and the onions will soften.
- Reheat: Reheat leftovers in the microwave until hot.
