A spoon serving chicken parmesan casserole

This chicken parmesan casserole is a quick, easy, and family-friendly twist on classic chicken parmesan. It’s made with the same ingredients, like chicken, marinara sauce, and cheese, but it’s all mixed together and baked as a casserole.

This recipe is similar to my chicken parmesan pasta, but it starts with cooked and shredded chicken, like rotisserie chicken, which makes it even easier. It’s become my go-to for busy weeknights because it takes so little time to prep and the entire family loves it. All I need to do is add a simple veggie side dish and dinner is ready to go.

Why This Chicken Parmesan Casserole Is Great For Busy Weeknights

  • 15 minutes of prep. The prep time for this casserole is really boiling the noodles and then mixing the ingredients. Then it gets popped in the oven until it’s ready to enjoy.
  • Chicken parm flavors. This casserole has all the elements of traditional chicken parmesan, including the chicken, the marinara sauce, and the cheese. It’s just way easier to prepare!
  • Kid-approved. With noodles, chicken, and lots of cheese, chicken parmesan casserole is one of those dishes that even picky eaters approve of. It’s been a hit with the whole family in my house.

Ingredient Notes

Here’s an overview of the few ingredients needed to make this casserole. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card at the end of the post for the exact measurements.

  • Rotini – Or any other similar pasta. I recommend a short pasta with texture that the sauce can cling to.
  • Marinara sauce – I like to use my homemade marinara sauce, but a jar from the store works too.
  • Italian seasoning – Adds flavor to the sauce.
  • Chicken – Rotisserie chicken works great for this recipe, but you can also use any cooked, shredded chicken you have on hand.
  • Cheese – I use a mixture of shredded mozzarella and grated parmesan. I highly recommend shredding and grating the cheese yourself for the best flavor and melt.
  • Panko breadcrumbs – If you don’t have panko, regular breadcrumbs can be used, but panko gives it a crispier topping.
  • Melted butter – For the crispy panko topping.
  • Basil – An optional garnish.

How To Make Chicken Parmesan Casserole

Since we start with cooked chicken, there is minimal work required to assemble this casserole. The printable instructions can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Prep. Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease the baking dish.
  • Cook the pasta. Boil the pasta according to the package instructions. Drain and transfer to a mixing bowl.
  • Combine. Add the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, chicken, a cup of mozzarella cheese, and ¼ cup of grated parmesan to the bowl. Mix to combine.
  • Assemble. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish. Top with the remaining cheese.
  • Add the topping. Combine the panko breadcrumbs, butter, and salt. Sprinkle evenly over the cheese layer.
  • Bake. Cover with foil. Bake for 20 minutes then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes. The cheese should be melted and bubbly and the breadcrumbs golden brown.
  • Enjoy. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

Here are a few general tips and tricks for preparing this chicken parmesan casserole recipe for the first time.

  • Don’t overcook the noodles. Be sure to cook the rotini to al dente and not any longer. It will continue to cook in the oven and you really don’t want mushy noodles.
  • Add more cheese. For extra cheesiness, add more mozzarella or mix in some shredded provolone or fontina cheese.
  • Stir in some veggies. For extra flavor, stir in sautéed mushrooms, onions, spinach, or diced bell peppers with the pasta mixture.
  • Try it with breaded chicken. Feel free to swap the shredded chicken for diced breaded chicken, such as cut up chicken patties. It’ll give the casserole a different texture and the sauce absorbs nicely into the breading.
