Sugar cookie mix is infused with jello powder to make these bright and colorful Jello Cookies. With only 5 ingredients, these are a fun dessert the entire family can help make!

I love making these jello cookies in the summer. They’re a great one to get your kids and grandkids involved in making. They’ll love the bright colors and rolling the dough in the sugar. Since the cookies are colored with jello powder and not food coloring, they’re virtually mess-free too. Be sure to check out my Cool Whip cookies too, they’re equally as fun!
Why These Jello Cookies Are So Fun To Make
This is a great recipe to get the kids involved in! Here are a few reasons why.
- Only 5 ingredients. These cookies start with a sugar cookie mix, which cuts down on the prep and need to measure ingredients.
- Bright & colorful. I used four different jello flavors to create red, blue, green, and yellow cookies. I love having the variety of colors in each batch of cookies! Feel free to use any colors and as many of them as you’d like.
- Super easy. In part because there are only 5 ingredients, these jello cookies are quick and easy to make. The dough takes just a few minutes to prepare. The “hardest” part is just waiting for the dough to chill before baking.
Recipe Ingredients
This easy Jello cookies recipe requires just 5 simple ingredients! Scroll down to the recipe card below for the exact measurements.
- Sugar cookie mix – I used Pillsbury but any brand works.
- Butter – I recommend unsalted butter but salted is also fine here.
- Egg
- Jello powder – I used a combination of cherry, lime, berry blue, and lemon jello. Feel to use any combination of flavors you prefer.
- Granulated sugar – For rolling the cookies.
How To Make Jello Cookies
It takes just a few minutes to make these jello cookies, though keep in mind the dough needs to chill for 30 minutes before baking. The printable instructions are in the recipe card below.
- Prep. Preheat the oven to 375. Line the baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Make the dough. Combine the sugar cookie mix, butter, and egg until a smooth dough forms.
- Add the color. Divide the sugar cookie dough into four portions, placing each one in a separate bowl. Add one flavor of Jello powder to each portion. Knead the dough until the powder is fully mixed in and the color is evenly distributed.
- Roll in sugar. Shape 1 tablespoon balls of dough. Coat each of the cookie dough balls in granulated sugar, then place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets.
- Chill. Flatten each dough ball slightly. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Bake. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers are soft. Cool completely on a wire rack before enjoying.
Tips & Variations
Here are a few things to keep in mind when making these cookies.
- Any jello flavor works. If you don’t have all the Jello flavors listed, use what you have on hand or double up on your favorites like grape, watermelon, cranberry, strawberry, orange, etc…
- Chill the dough. This step is important to achieving soft, chewy cookies. Otherwise they’ll spread too much in the oven and be flat and overbaked.
- Don’t overbake. The edges should be set but the centers should still appear a little soft. They will continue to cook and firm up as they cool.
- Check the size of the cookie mix. While any brand of sugar cookie mix works in this recipe, do double-check the ounces as some brands have changed the size of the mix.
Proper Storage
- Room temperature. Store cooled jello cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- Freezer. Freeze unbaked, sugar-coated dough balls on a baking sheet until firm. Transfer them to a freezer-safe bag and store for up to 3 months. Bake directly from frozen, adding an extra 1-2 minutes to the baking time.
Jello Cookies
Ingredients
- 17.5 ounce package store-bought sugar cookie mix I used Pillsbury
- 1 stick unsalted butter softened (1/2 cup)
- 1 large egg
- 12 Tablespoons Jello powder 3 tablespoons each of cherry, lime, berry blue, and lemon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar for rolling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.
- Mix the sugar cookie mix, softened butter, and egg in a large bowl until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide the dough evenly into four portions and place each portion in a separate bowl.
- Add 3 tablespoons of Jello powder to each portion (one flavor per bowl) and knead the dough until the powder is fully mixed in and the color is evenly distributed.
- Scoop about 1 tablespoon of dough, roll it into a ball, and then coat it thoroughly in granulated sugar. Repeat with the remaining dough, spacing the sugar-coated cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
- Flatten each ball slightly with your fingers or the bottom of a glass. Once flattened, refrigerate the baking sheets with the dough for at least 30 minutes to help the cookies hold their shape during baking.
- Bake the chilled cookie dough in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers still appear soft.
- Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely before serving. Enjoy!
