A jar of peanut butter granola

I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve made this peanut butter granola recipe in the past few months. The entire family is addicted! It’s become the go-to snack for after school and a quick breakfast on those mornings when there’s never enough time. It’s perfect for when we’re craving peanut butter, but I didn’t have time to make peanut butter baked oatmeal or peanut butter banana bread.

Why I Love This Homemade Peanut Butter Granola

  • 9 ingredients. One thing I love about making my own granola is that I know EXACTLY what’s in it. This peanut butter granola recipe is made with only 9 ingredients and still stays fresh for a couple of weeks.
  • Easy to customize. Make this granola your own! I often make swaps depending on what I already have on hand, like using maple syrup instead of honey or stirring in some dried fruits. I included lots of suggestions below!
  • Crunchy & tasty. This peanut butter granola is sweet, nutty, and crunchy. The honey and brown sugar give it a little sticky sweet texture, while the oats and peanuts add crunch. I tossed in a handful of chocolate chips for that peanut butter chocolate flavor I love so much.

Recipe Ingredients

Here’s an overview of everything needed to make this homemade granola. Scroll down to the recipe card below for the exact measurements.

  • Peanut butter – I like to use natural peanut butter in my granola, so I truly know exactly what’s in it. Feel free to use your favorite.
  • Honey – Sweetens the granola and adds a lightly sticky texture.
  • Butter – I used salted butter for the adding flavor.
  • Brown sugar – Sweetens the granola and adds warm flavor.
  • Cinnamon – A pinch of cinnamon pairs nicely with the brown sugar and adds warmth.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Rolled oats – The base of the granola. Be sure to use regular rolled oats, not quick oats or steel cut. The texture will be very different.
  • Roasted peanuts – Roughly chopped. I like to add these for crunch and a bit of extra protein to keep with the peanut butter theme.
  • Chocolate chips – Semi-sweet chocolate chips add just a bit of sweet chocolatey flavor and pair nicely with the peanut butter. Feel free to omit if you prefer peanut butter only.

How To Make Peanut Butter Granola

This granola recipe is so quick and easy to make. The printable instructions can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Prep. Preheat the oven to 325F. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Make the peanut butter mixture. Combine the peanut butter, honey, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals until smooth and combined, stirring after each one. Mix in the vanilla.
  • Combine the ingredients. Add the rolled oats and peanuts to a large bowl. Pour the warm peanut butter mixture on top. Stir until everything is coated.
  • Bake. Spread the mixture on the baking sheet in an even layer. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through. Let cool completely on the baking sheet.
  • Add the chocolate. Once the granola is completely cooled, stir in the chocolate chips. Enjoy!

Recipe Variations

One of the fun things about this peanut butter granola recipe is that there are lots of ways to make it your own. Here are a few ideas.

  • Cool first. Be sure the granola is completely cool before adding the chocolate chips to prevent them from melting.
  • Add dried fruits. Feel free to mix in dried fruits like raisins, cranberries, or chopped apricots after the granola has cooled.
  • Make it vegan. Swap the butter for melted coconut oil or canola oil and use maple syrup instead of honey to make vegan peanut butter granola.
  • Try it with syrup. Maple syrup can replace honey for a different flavor. Just be sure to use real maple syrup and not pancake syrup.
  • Use a different nut butter. Feel free to try this recipe with any nut butter, such as almond butter.

Ways To Use It

There are lots of ways to enjoy peanut butter granola!

It makes a great snack by the handful. It’s great to stick in your purse if you’ll be running errands or to hand to hangry kids after school. We’ve also taken it on hikes.

For breakfast, it’s wonderful sprinkled over Greek yogurt or served with fresh berries. It makes a great addition to any smoothie bowl or breakfast yogurt bowl. You can also serve it as cereal in a bowl with milk.

Proper Storage

  • Room temperature. Store peanut butter granola in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  • Reheat. There’s typically no need to reheat the granola since it’s enjoyed at room temperature. However, if the granola loses its crunch, spread it on a baking sheet and bake at 300°F (150°C) for 5-7 minutes to crisp it up again. Just keep in mind that the chocolate chips will melt and it’s not ideal to bake dried fruits.

My favorite part was the honey that was added. Gave it a sweet taste. I started to add this granola to the Greek yogurt I eat and it made it 100 times better. I highly recommend!
