A creamy chicken mixture is topped with buttery Ritz crackers in this easy Ritz Chicken Casserole recipe. With 7 ingredients and 15 minutes of prep, it’s a great dinner option for busy families!

As a busy mom, casseroles are one of my go-to menu items. I have a handful that I’ve been making regularly for years, like pork chop casserole and Dorito casserole. I’m always trying out new ones and this Ritz chicken casserole has recently won over the whole family. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s so yummy!
Why I Love This Ritz Chicken Casserole Recipe
I make a lot of casseroles, especially during the busier seasons of life, and this one remains one of my favorites. Here are a few reasons why.
- Only 7 ingredients. There are only 7 ingredients (not including salt & pepper) in this casserole. They’re all pretty basic and easy to find too. I usually have most of them already in the pantry.
- 15 minutes of prep. This casserole is ready to serve in just 45 minutes and only 10-15 minutes are actual hands-on prep. I love that I can whip this up quickly, pop it in the oven, and have 30 minutes to pick up the kitchen or do something else before it’s ready.
- Make ahead friendly. If I know I’m going to be short on time, sometimes I will assemble this Ritz chicken casserole in advance and then pop it in the oven. It can also be assembled and frozen. (Full instructions on that below!)
Recipe Ingredients
Here’s an overview of the ingredients needed to make this casserole. You can find the exact measurements in the recipe card below.
- Condensed chicken soup – Do not add any liquid to the soup. Make sure the can is 10.5 ounces as some brands have changed the size of the cans.
- Spices – Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- Sour cream – Adds a creaminess to the casserole while also balancing the richness of the soup.
- Sliced green onions – I like green onions in this recipe more than regular onions as they have a less intense flavor.
- Chicken – I like to use rotisserie chicken or leftover roast chicken. You could use canned chicken, though it won’t have as much flavor, or cook and shred chicken breasts for this recipe.
- Ritz crackers – Crushed. The Ritz topping adds texture to the casserole.
- Butter – Unsalted since Ritz crackers are already salty. It helps the Ritz topping stick together and get crunchy in the oven.
How To Make Ritz Chicken Casserole
This chicken casserole is so easy to prepare and takes just a few minutes of hands-on time. Scroll down to the recipe card for the printable version of the instructions.
- Prep. Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease the baking dish.
- Make the chicken mixture. Stir the soup, sour cream, and seasonings until well combined. Fold in the chicken along with the green onions, making sure the chicken is well coated. Spread the mixture in the baking dish.
- Add the Ritz topping. Mix the crushed Ritz crackers with the melted butter until all the crackers are evenly coated. Sprinkle over the chicken mixture in the baking dish.
- Bake. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through. Enjoy!
Tips & Variations
Here are a few ways I’ve customized this casserole, as well as a few general tips for making it.
- Make it cheesy. For an extra layer of flavor, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the chicken mixture before adding the cracker topping.
- Add some heat. If you prefer a bit of heat, consider adding a dash of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to the chicken mixture.
- Try it with veggies. You could stir some frozen mixed veggies into the chicken mixture if desired.
- Use seasoned chicken. I find that rotisserie chicken is a great option for this casserole because it’s usually well seasoned. Cans of chicken or plain shredded breasts don’t have as much flavor.
- Cool before serving. Let the Ritz chicken casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. This gives the chicken mixture time to firm up a bit and makes it easier to serve.
Serving Suggestions
I usually serve this Ritz chicken casserole with a side of steamed or roasted veggies. Air fryer brussels sprouts, oven roasted asparagus, and oven roasted mixed veggies are all great options.
How To Store & Reheat Leftovers
- Fridge. Store any leftover Ritz chicken casserole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer. You can freeze the assembled, unbaked casserole for up to 2 months. Wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before baking. Leftovers can also be frozen in the same way.
- Reheat. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or the entire casserole dish in the oven until heated through.
