Ingredients You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need to make Sausage Balls (the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the easy to print recipe card):
- Sharp cheddar cheese – it’s best to buy a block of cheddar cheese and freshly shred it for this recipe. Cheese that you buy already shredded has less moisture and doesn’t work as well when making these sausage balls.
- Ground pork sausage – we used a mild ground sausage, but you can use any flavor you like.
- Biscuit baking mix – we used Bisquick, but you can use any similar biscuit mix you like.
- Milk – the milk serves to add just enough moisture to allow the mixture to be rolled into balls. Use any milk you like.
- Dried chives – the chives are optional but add a nice flavor and a little green color.
How to Make Sausage Balls
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, combine the freshly shredded cheddar cheese, ground sausage, biscuit baking mix, milk, and chives.
- Form the dough into 24 balls and place on a large baking sheet.
- Bake the balls at 350°F for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and the sausage is fully cooked.
How to Serve Sausage Balls
Try serving with ketchup, hot sauce, cheese sauce, or combine sour cream with some sweet chili sauce. We also have a few different Fry Sauce Recipes that go amazing with these!
How to Store Leftover Sausage Balls
Keep the leftovers in an airtight food storage container or a zip-top bag. Refrigerate for up to three days and reheat individual servings in the microwave until hot.

Great recipe, but I believe the listed egg is in error.
Thanks Susan! I edited the post. There is no egg in the recipe.
Do you cook the sausage first?
No, all the ingredients get mixed together and then baked.
How bad will they come out if I use shredded cheese,? That’s all I have . . .
I made them with shredded cheese and just added a little more milk and it was delicious!
We always make them with shredded cheese….no problem.
Have you tried gluten free Bisquick for this?
Kathy, we have not but it should work as well.
Yes and although good I thought it was a little dry. Next time I won’t add the full 2 cups.
Where can I get gluten free bisquick?
What sauce is pictured?
I want to know, too!
I want to know about the sauce also.
