The Ingredients
(the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the easy to print recipe card):
Butter – we use regular salted butter, but unsalted works as well.
All-purpose flour – the flour serves as the thickener for the cheese dip.
Milk – whole or 2% milk would be the best to use for this recipe.
Sharp cheddar cheese – buy it already grated, or freshly grate cheddar from a block of cheese.
How to Make Homemade Cheese Sauce
Melt the butter in a large saucepan or skillet over medium-high heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
Slowly whisk in the milk. It may be a big clumpy at first, but keep whisking and the sauce will become smooth.
Add the cheese and stir until melted into the sauce.
This will be thick and creamy.
Tip: for a thinner sauce, add milk a small amount at a time to the sauce as it cooks over medium heat until it reaches your desired consistency.
What to Serve with Cheese Dip
