What You’ll Need
I use common ingredients elevate these roasted sweet potatoes so they should be very easy to find at the grocery store (get the full amounts in the recipe box below).
- Sweet potatoes: Fresh sweet potatoes will always work better than canned ones. If you use canned sweet potatoes, they are cooked and soft, and they also have a syrup that sweetens them.
- Butter: I prefer unsalted butter in this recipe but you may use salted butter for a slightly more savory flavor profile.
- Spices: I use cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and fresh thyme. The warm spices compliment the potatoes and the pecans while the thyme adds a subtle herbaceous flavor.
- Maple syrup: The robust and sweet flavor of maple syrup helps the sweet potatoes caramelize perfectly in the oven.
- Honey: I like to add some honey for depth and extra sweetness. Feel free to leave it out or use your favorite variety!
- Pecans: Chopped pecans add the best crunchy texture to this roasted sweet potato recipe. You may use walnuts, too!

How to Roast Sweet Potatoes
Below are all of the steps to help you prepare and cook your tasty roasted sweet potatoes to caramelized perfection. It’s so much easier to follow than you may think!
- Prep the oven and baking sheet. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or spray it generously with nonstick cooking spray.
- Prepare the sweet potatoes. Wash and peel the sweet potatoes. Then, slice them into rounds that are about ½ inch thick.
- Toss them in the butter mixture. Combine melted butter, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Toss the sweet potato slices in the butter mixture until they are evenly coated.
- Arrange them on the pan and bake. Next, arrange the slices on the prepared baking sheet pan so they aren’t overlapping. Bake them in the middle of the oven for 25-30 minutes or until they are fully cooked and tender.

- Make the syrup and pecan topping. During the last few minutes of cooking, add maple syrup, the remaining ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, chopped pecans, and fresh thyme in a small bowl. Stir well to combine.
- Top the potatoes and bake them. Spoon about ½ teaspoon of the mixture on top of each potato slice. Put the back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes to allow everything to caramelize.
- Garnish and serve. Top the finished sweet potatoes with a savory garnish like crumbled feta or goat cheese. Enjoy this with your favorite main course!

Tips and Variations
- Cut them into cubes. I cut the sweet potatoes into rounds for this recipe, but you may cut them into 1-inch cubes instead. They will take a little less time to cook, and you will have to pour the maple mixture over the top of all of the potatoes.
- Bake them long enough. Fork test the sweet potatoes to ensure they are soft and tender. They take longer to cook than traditional potatoes and are easy to undercook, so I like to check them so they aren’t crunchy.
- Don’t crowd the pan. The key to achieving perfectly caramelized sweet potatoes is to not overcrowd the baking sheet. Arrange them in a single layer without any overlap so all of the pieces can cook and brown evenly.
- Variations. Consider roasting cubed potatoes with the melted butter and using them for salads, tacos, burrito bowls or just a side dish that’s not a sweet.
Proper Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I do not recommend freezing them as it alters the texture and makes them difficult to reheat properly.
You may reheat your leftover sweet potatoes in the microwave or a covered baking dish in the oven. Just heat them until they are warm to prevent them from becoming mushy.

- 4 Tablespoons honey

- While the potatoes are cooking, mix maple syrup, honey, chopped pecans, nutmeg, remaining cinnamon, and thyme in a bowl.
- Top each sweet potato slice with about 1 teaspoon of the pecan & syrup mix and return the baking pan to the oven. Bake for another 10 minutes or until the sweet potatoes look well caramelized around the edges.
