What is a Dump Cake?

A ‘dump cake’ is a cake using ingredients that are literally dumped in a baking dish together. There is no mixing required, and no extra dirty dishes or mixing bowls have to be cleaned. Usually, fruit or canned fruit is used as the base. Top with a boxed cake mix and a wet ingredient like melted butter. The Caramel apple dump cake recipe was a big hit for Thanksgiving. So much so that I am making it again for the other side of the family for Christmas. Very tasty and easy to put together!

    1. Hi Lu. Yes, you can make this in the crockpot. Add the ingredients in the slow cooker, cover and cook on high for 2 hours. Check the caramels to make sure they are melted before serving.

    1. Hi Jessica. Since this recipe uses no other salt, you will be fine using either depending on your preference.

I had werther originals on hand so I used them and some caramel topping, had it with vanilla ice cream! Delicious!!!

    1. Hi Carol. I think you have the 2x clicked in the recipe card for doubling the recipe. Just one box and two cans for the recipe unless you are doubling it.

  3. Hi. Excited to try this, sounds great.
Can I double this recipe? If so, should I still use 9 x 13 pan? How does that effect time to bake?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Lorri. Yes, you can double the recipe, but I would use two 9 x 13’s for the best results.

This easy dump cake turns out great. I replaced the Kraft Caramel Chews with Caramel Baking Chips. The ladies in my game night group loved it!

    1. Hi Bobbie. Yes, you could halve this recipe in an 8×8. I would recommend just splitting the cake mix and use the remainder the next time. All other ingredients will be halved.

  5. After dieting since July today I was craving something sweet. Found this recipe, knew i had canned apples but unsure about the cake mix. Knew for sure I didn’t have caramels though. So my panty pull was Angel Food cake mix, the two cans of apples, and a little bit of apple cider. Followed the directions but skipped the caramels and drizzled cider over the dry cake mix. Turned out delicious!! Thanks for the recipe even though I modified it somewhat.

If you take the Kraft caramels and mix with 3 tablespoons of heavy cream, heat in microwave for 60 seconds, it makes a wonderful caramel sauce that will not get hard when cool

I made this last year and decided to go ahead and make for tomorrow, I hope it is good tomorrow as it was last year. Last year I found something called caramel melts that worked fabulously this year I had to settle for kraft caramels. I hope it is as good. We might be reheating it tomorrow if it is too chewy cool.

    1. I saw those caramel melts. You like them better then the squares?? This is my first time making this. I bought the caramel squares.

It’s very sweet. The store I went to didn’t have regular caramels, just caramel nuggets (for lack of a better word), so the measurement may have been overkill. Still, it was very good, you just had to make sure the portions are small.
I’m making it again with no sugar added pie filling and about half of the caramel nuggets.

REALLY GOOD AND FAST TO MAKE..
SPECIALLY IF YOUR IN A HURRY TO
    MAKE SOMETHING SWEET……

  10. This sounds good but I’d like to know if the caramels harden again when it cools off. I’m thinking of taking it to a potluck and can’t keep it warm.

    1. I used werthers soft caramel chews, and they did get quite chewy. I am making the next cake with caramel sauce instead.

    2. I’ve made it servile times with camerals didn’t get hard but it didn’t last long

    1. bonnie massicott

no you would not want to add oatmeal on top of cake mix.its a dump cake nota crisp

Made this for a neighborhood party. Big hit. It’s much easier with caramel bits if you can find them in the baking aisle. No unwrapping and no cutting!

  13. Does “1 cup 2 sticks butter” mean a total of 2 cups butter? (My sticks of butter are 1/2 cup each). Or total of 1 cup butter??

Please respond soon cuz I plan to make it on Saturday!
    Thank you,
    Kelly

    1. I made this last night. I cut my butter slices really thin and covered the whole cake and it didn’t quite use the whole cup of butter, maybe 3/4 c. I also sprinkled some cinnamon sugar on top. The top was crunchy and delicious. A huge hit with everyone. I’ve made apple dump cake before, but the caramel really kicked it up a notch. I used caramel bits and they worked great. Thanks Annette for the recipe.

Hubby wanted dessert…went to my pantry & had everything but the caramels. It turned out AMAZING!!!! I’m planning on making it again for a Thanksgiving dessert. I’ll be sure to include the caramels & I’m thinking of mixing in some toasted pecans with the canned apples! Can’t wait for Thanksgiving!!!

Can you use GLUTEN FREE cake mix with this recipe? Please respond quickly. Need to make it the end of the week. Thanks

You can also us a spice cake in the place of the yellow cake mix which is a wonderful addition to the apples and Carmel.

  17. I really loved the taste of this cake, but the caramels resolidified when we added ice cream. If making again I’d either use the caramel melts or I’d try caramel sauce.

I made this for the first time recently and my family loved it..this is will be my new to go desert to share with others..thanks for sharing..

I hadn’t had good luck with dump cakes but then I did something unusual. I now take the cake mix and the cold butter (in slices) and blitz them in the food processor. It just worked better for me.

    1. In the recipe for the caramel apple dump cake the recipe ingredients says one cup two sticks butter. Should that be one cup ( two sticks) butter or is it a total of four sticks of butter

I made this for Thanksgiving  it was delicious except for the caramels, I thought they won’t melt but they didn’t so they were sticking to our teeth. I would definitely make again except use caramel sauce.

I made the peach version with a vanilla cake mix and it turned out great. Only issue I had was after cutting butter I couldn’t get them apart to put on the cake 😀 so I will put back in frig to stiffen before handling to put on the cake. It was easy like she said so I’m not intimidated or afraid it would be like an episode of “Nailed It!”

    1. I’ve made peach dump cake for some time now and you’ve got to slice and apply the pats of butter individually. It’s obviously the most tedious part, but definitely worth it!

I made this and it was great!  The only thing I did different was add some cinnamon sugar on top before baking.  Great with ice cream and it couldn’t be any easier!

  23. This is probably a great recipe, however, it’s so hard to see in between ALL OF THE ADDS! Sorry, I know this is how you make revenue but it’s very difficult to read.

    Dumpdidleyicious!!!
I split the recipe in half then added pecans to the top. Perfection. It was so good we forgot to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. LOL!
    Definitely making this one again.

I made this last night. Amazing! I used Aldi white cake, caramel dip and 3 cans of their fried apples with cinnamon. I also added nutmeg, allspice and a sprinkle of ginger. Kind of dangerous because I couldn’t stop eating it! I’m glad I found this recipe!

  27. Kimberley Elam

i made this yesterday. it was good. but next time i will use a different cake mix flavor. like butter pecan.

I made this cake today. Halved the recipe since its only me and hubby. Used a yellow cake Jiffy mix and for the caramel, I used a jar caramel. It was very good. Will make it again.

This is in my oven as we speak. I had to cut it down to half the amount because there’s only one of me. And, I found Hershey’s salted caramel chips and used those. I could have eaten the canned apples and the caramel chips uncooked! YUM Can’t wait for this to finish baking!

  30. I haven’t made it yet, but I am going to just as the recipe directs and may try with the spice cake as well.

  31. I am making using the caramel bits. Will see hiw this turns out. As to caramel hardening after cake cools, I think you would just warm your serving up in microwave for a few seconds.

Please advise what brand of carmels work best. Tried this recipe and loved it except the carmels I used seemed hard and some did not soften during baking. Definitely will bake again and share source . Thanks for any help you can provide!

    1. Christine S Meddaugh

I used an ice cream caramel sauce rather than caramels. I also add approx. 1 Tbsp of lemon juice, it pairs well with the apples and the extra sweetness of the caramels.

  33. 5 stars
I made this using a spice cake mix and approx 1/4 jar Smuckers caramel sauce and it was delicious!

  34. I have not made this yet — but would probably use a spice cake mix for more flavor.  But probably good no matter what!  I definitely like the idea of adding caramels to the mix!

Hi, thanks for the recipe. It has a great taste. One note-I did have to make 24 hours ahead of serving, and my caramels did not completely melt out-they firmed back up on cooling completely. They wound up being chewy lumps throughout the cake. Next time I will make a caramel sauce and pour over the apples if I have to make ahead. Overall keeper!
