Deep fried Oreos have always been one of my family’s favorite fair foods. In fact, some years, they were probably half of the reason we went to the fair! If that sounds like your family, this recipe is for you! And if you’ve never had a deep fried Oreo, you’ve been missing out and this recipe is for you too.

Why These Deep Fried Oreos Are A Family Favorite

This recipe is a hit with the entire family but especially kids and teens! Here are a few reasons why.

  • Fair food at home. Deep fried Oreos are a popular food at most fairs and carnivals. But now we don’t have to wait until the annual fair to indulge! And, if we’re being honest – I think my version is just a liiittle better than the local fair!
  • The novelty factor. There’s just something fun about deep frying Oreos. They feel a little fun, a little indulgent, like a treat that you only have on a rare occasion. I think that gives them a little extra appeal!
  • Quick & easy. This recipe requires just 5 very basic ingredients, like Oreos, pancake mix, and milk. The entire batch takes just 20 minutes to make, from start to finish.

Recipe Ingredients

Here’s an overview of the simple ingredients needed to make this dessert. Scroll down to the recipe card below for the exact measurements.

  • Whole milk – Almond milk is a great substitute.
  • Egg
  • Vegetable oil – Canola oil works just as well for frying,
  • Pancake mix – I used Bisquick but any pancake mix works.
  • Oreo cookies – I used the regular Oreo cookies. Feel free to experiment with different Oreo flavors!

How To Make Deep Fried Oreos

Homemade fried Oreos are so quick and easy to make! Here’s a run-down of the process. The printable instructions are in the recipe card below.

  • Heat the oil. Heat 4 inches of oil in a deep saucepan over medium heat, until it reaches 350F.
  • Make the batter. In the meantime, whisk together the milk, egg, and 2 teaspoons of oil. Gradually mix in the pancake mix until smooth. It should be thick enough to coat the cookies but not runny.
  • Fry the Oreos. Use a fork to carefully coat each cookie with the batter. Drop 2-3 Oreos at a time into the oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
  • Repeat. Repeat the process with the remaining Oreos.
  • Enjoy. Serve the fried Oreos immediately, while still warm.

How To Tell When The Batter Is Just Right

The secret to the best deep fried Oreos is getting the batter just right. It should coat the Oreos in a smooth, even layer and stick to the cookie without dripping or sliding off. I like to dip an Oreo into the batter to test and make sure it’s just right.

If the batter feels too thick, thin it with an extra splash of milk until it clings to the cookie just right. If the batter is too thin, gradually add more pancake mix 1 tablespoon at a time until thick enough to adhere to the cookies.

Tips & Tricks

Here are a few things I’ve found to be important when making this recipe.

  • Keep the oil temperature even. Allow the vegetable oil to come back up to temperature between batches for the best results. If the oil is too hot, the fried Oreo batter will burn and if the oil is too cold, the fried Oreos will be very greasy.
  • Fry in batches. To keep the oil temperature steady, fry in small batches. This ensures even cooking.
  • Add flavor to the batter. Mix a bit of cinnamon or vanilla extract into the pancake batter for a flavor twist.
  • Experiment with Oreo flavors. Use flavored Oreos like mint or peanut butter for a different taste.

How To Store Leftovers

  • Fridge. Fried Oreos are best served fresh. If stored, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat. Reheat them in an air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for a couple of minutes, or in an oven at the same temperature for about 5-7 minutes.

Notes

*To tell if your batter is just right, dip an Oreo into it and lift it out slowly. The batter should coat the cookie fully in a smooth, even layer without any of the Oreo peeking through. It should stick to the cookie without dripping too much. If the batter slides off or seems too runny, add a little more pancake mix and stir. If it feels clumpy or overly thick, mix in a small splash of milk to thin it out.

Serving Suggestions

The most common way to serve fried Oreos is with a dusting of powdered sugar on top. For an extra sweet treat, we like to drizzle them with a bit of chocolate sauce. They also pair well with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
