The Best Sweet Potato Butter Recipe

Creamy sweet potato butter is a versatile ingredient you should try if you’ve never had it. It has fresh sweet potatoes with acidity from apple juice and sweetness from the honey. I also add cinnamon and nutmeg for warmth and a lovely aroma. It will have your kitchen smelling like Fall!

This sweet potato butter can be used in savory and sweet dishes any time of year, not just for Thanksgiving. Spread it on biscuits, or spoon it over your favorite protein! I highly recommend that you try Crockpot Apple Butter, too.

Why You’ll Love This Sweet Potato Butter

  • Makes a great gift. Store this sweet potato butter in small mason jars and decorate them with ribbons for the perfect gift.
  • Freezes well. If you’d like to make this recipe ahead, it freezes and thaws beautifully.
  • Budget-friendly. This is a super affordable recipe with inexpensive ingredients.

What You’ll Need

Here is everything you need to make this super simple sweet potato butter recipe. It uses everyday ingredients that you will find at any grocery store! The recipe card has more information and measurements.

  • Sweet potatoes: Peel and chop your sweet potatoes into small, uniform pieces so they cook evenly. I recommend around ¼ or ⅛ inch.
  • Apple juice: I add apple juice for acidity and to get the perfect consistency. The liquid doesn’t water down the sweet flavors.
  • Molasses: I enjoy the rich, deep flavor of molasses, and it adds sweetness and hints of caramel to the sweet potato butter
  • Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt enhance the natural flavor of the sweet potatoes and also go great with the apple juice. You may use ground clove or ginger if you wish for a slightly different flavor profile.
  • Honey: This adds the perfect amount of sweet flavor to the recipe. I prefer it over sugar in this case.

How to Make Sweet Potato Butter

Once all of the ingredients are added to the Instant Pot, allow it to soften and cook down to perfection. Blend the mixture until smooth, and then it’s ready to enjoy.

  • Add the ingredients to the Instant Pot. First, add the sweet potato pieces to the bottom of the Instant Pot. Then, add apple juice, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and honey. Stir until everything is combined and the potatoes are well coated.
  • Cover and cook. Lock the lid into place and cook on the manual setting for about 15 minutes.
  • Release the pressure. Allow the pressure to naturally release.
  • Puree. Then, transfer the sweet potato butter mixture to a blender or food processor. Puree it until it’s smooth.
  • Serve. Enjoy it with your favorite food!

Serving Suggestions

Spread the sweet potato butter on a slice of Slow Cooker Cinnamon Raisin Bread, Homemade biscuits, or muffins.

Add it to pancakes, Hawaiian Roll French Toast or Pumpkin Waffles instead of traditional butter.

It also makes a great glaze for meats! I recommend you try sweet potato butter with Pork Roast and Easy Oven Roasted Chicken.

Tips for Success

  • Handle with care. As the Instant Pot releases pressure, it creates steam. This will be very hot so allow it to fully release and be careful so you aren’t burned.
  • Use maple syrup. Try using maple syrup instead of honey for greater depth of flavor.
  • Ensure the apple juice is unsweetened. I use unsweetened apple juice in this recipe. If you choose to use sweetened, cut down the honey to 1-2 teaspoons.

Proper Storage

Store the sweet potato butter in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. To freeze, place it in a freezer-safe container and it will stay fresh for up to 3 months.

    2. Hi Lois. I would try 4-5 hours on low or 2-3 hors on high in a slow cooker and see what that does. The canning process would be the same.
