Tips for Icing this Layered Apple Spice Cake

With this recipe, it is extremely easy to frost the cake. Because you are not covering the cake completely, it makes it that much easier. You will be scooping icing onto each layer and smoothing it out. You will be frosting the top of the cake, but then the only frosting you need on the sides it the excess frosting from each layer. This gives the sweetness of the icing on the cake but does not take away from the taste of the apple spice cake recipe.

How to Make a Layered Apple Spice Cake

  • Begin by preparing the cake as directed.  You will want to cook completely, then allow each layer to cool before you begin icing them.
  • While the cake is baking, you can prepare your icing for the cake.  This cinnamon frosting is easy to mix up and can be stored in the refrigerator until ready to assemble the cake.
  • Trim each layer as needed to make a level surface for building your cake.  Place the first layer on a piece of cardboard or cake stand and begin by adding scoops of frosting to your first layer.

Adding frosting to the apple spice cake

  • Frost each layer and gently stack them on top of each other.

  • Lightly frost the sides of the cake with the remaining icing.  You do not have to have a complete coating, as this will be a more “rustic” looking cake.
  • Your final steps will be to drizzle caramel syrup over the top and add small piped dollops of icing around the edges to top with sliced apples as desired. An up close picture of an apple spice cake with frosting and caramel drizzle
