Copycat Outback Steakhouse Bread Recipe

Whenever I take the family to Outback Steakhouse, we tend to fill up on that delicious brown bread they give you while you wait for your meal. For as long as I can remember, my kids have loved it. I’m sure they could go through a loaf by themselves! So, when I tried to make it at home, you can probably guess how excited they were.

This is by far the best copycat Outback bread recipe. The molasses and honey perfectly capture the rich sweetness without making the bread feel dense. It’s soft and fluffy on the inside with the perfect brown crust on the outside. The best part is that this recipe is easy to double or even triple depending on how much bread you want!

Recipe Ingredients

Here are the ingredients needed to make this copycat Outback bread recipe. The exact measurements are on the recipe card below.

  • Warm water: This is crucial for activating the yeast so your bread will rise.
  • Vegetable oil
  • Honey: Any honey variety will work wonderfully!
  • Molasses: I use dark, unsulphured molasses. I do not recommend blackstrap molasses for this recipe as it’s not the best for baking.
  • Flour: You will need whole wheat flour and bread flour for this recipe.
  • Cocoa powder: This is the secret ingredient that gives the bread its signature color.
  • Salt
  • Active dry yeast: If you are making any sort of bread or dough recipe, you typically need yeast for it to rise.
  • Cornmeal: I like to use cornmeal to prevent the bread from sticking when it bakes.

How to Make Outback Steakhouse Bread

If you have never made homemade bread, don’t worry! These easy directions will give you delicious bread. For detailed steps, see the recipe card below.

  • Combine wet ingredients. In a large stand mixer bowl, combine warm water, oil, honey, and molasses with a dough hook until well mixed.
  • Add whole wheat flour, cocoa, and salt. Add these ingredients and mix on low speed until combined.
  • Rest. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and rest for 10 minutes
  • Add yeast and bread flour. Gradually add active yeast and 1 cup of bread flour at a time. Mix until the dough becomes an elastic ball and doesn’t cling to the bowl.
  • Prepare baking sheets. Line baking sheets with parchment paper and dust with cornmeal.
  • Portion and shape loaves. Transfer the dough to a floured surface, divide it into 4 equal portions and shape them into loaves.
  • Cover and rise. Place the loaves on the baking sheets and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Allow them to rise for 45-60 minutes.
  • Prep the oven. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Tips for Success

  • Warm water. Ensure that the water used in the bread dough is about 110 degrees F to properly activate the yeast.
  • Don’t skip resting. The rest time allows all of the liquids to absorb so you are not left with a wet dough.
  • Let it rise. The amount of time it takes for the bread to rise will vary based on the environment. Make sure that it doubles in size before baking.
  • Use a thermometer. If you are unsure if the Outback bread is thoroughly baked, use a food thermometer.
  • Add oats. For authenticity, top the bread with rolled oats before baking.
