Tips and Tricks for Perfect Butterscotch Brownies

  • Use parchment paper: Lining your baking pan with parchment paper makes it much easier to remove the brownies and also makes cleanup a breeze.
  • Cool completely before frosting: If the brownies are too warm when you apply the frosting, it will melt and become too thin. Waiting until the brownies are completely cool ensures a thick, delicious layer of frosting.
  • Store in an airtight container: To keep your brownies fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They can keep for up to a week.
  • Experiment with add-ins: These brownies can be customized with a number of add-ins. Try adding chocolate chips, toffee bits, or even a sprinkle of sea salt on the frosting for extra flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use normal sugar instead of brown sugar?

While you can use white sugar, brown sugar is recommended for its rich, molasses flavor which contributes to the classic butterscotch taste.

My frosting is too thin/thick. How can I fix it?

If your frosting is too thin, add more confectioners’ sugar a tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. If it’s too thick, add milk a teaspoon at a time until it becomes spreadable.

Can I freeze these brownies?

Absolutely! Make sure the brownies are completely cool and the frosting is set. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Why are my brownies dry/tough?

Overmixing the batter or overbaking can result in dry or tough brownies. Remember to mix just until the ingredients are incorporated and keep a close eye on them in the oven.
