Variations and Tips

  • Change the flavor – Swap out the orange cake mix and extract for lemon cake mix and extract. You’ll also want to use just a little yellow food coloring instead of orange.
  • White chocolate chips – if you don’t have white chocolate chips or don’t prefer them, you can absolutely make this recipe without them. Just skip that ingredient but otherwise make the cookies as directed.
  • Softened ingredients – make sure the butter and the cream cheese are softened. We also like to keep our eggs at room temperature when baking.
  • Use a cookie scoop – to make sure each cookie is the same size.

They were fantastic! I tried to give them a five but it wouldn’t take the fifth star. My son asked me what magic I used! Thank you!

Can I use semi-sweet chocolate chips instead and bake the batter in a 9 x 13 pan cookies to be cut into bars?

    1. Hi Mary Lou. I haven’t tried that but what you suggested should work fine. I would keep an eye on the baking time as the thickness will change. Let me know how it turns out!

Hi Jill, Just saw your Orange Creamsicle cookie recipe made with the Duncan Hines Orange Cake Mix. Unfortunately Congra who makes the cake mix discontinued making it. Of course you can get it on Amazon for $17 buck! But, you don’t know how old it is either. Any ideas on how I can make these cookies using maybe a yellow or white cake mix? Thanks Lilly.

    1. Hi Lilly. They do still make the cake mix as far as I can tell on the Duncan Hines website. If you click the “Buy Now” you can enter your zip code and it will show you what stores sell it near you. I do know it can be hard to find in some areas and may be seasonal in others. I hope this helps!

I can never find orange cake mix so I use white cake mix and they are still delicious! My son loves them!

Awesome! These cookies absolutely vanish when I bring them to potlucks!! Because of their orange color, I like to include them on my Halloween cookie plates! This recipe is super easy and positivity delicious!!

    1. Hi Deb. I haven’t tried it, but I think you could omit the cream cheese and have good results. I would probably add another 1/4 cup white chocolate chips and halve the powdered sugar amount as well.

  6. Hi My grandchildren love these cookies. However each time I make them the balls just melt out and I am left with a creamsicle sheet of cookie. . I am in Australia and wonder if our box cake mixes have a different amount of ingredients.
Do you have any suggestions please.

    1. Hi Kate, that is so strange. I’ve never had that happen. Try making the balls and refrigerating for 20 minutes before baking and see if that helps.

I have made this recipe 3 times and each time they are a big hit! They taste so much like the creamsicle that I remember from years ago! So good, especially in the summer.

I just made the Creamsicle cookies for a bake sale. They came out perfect!!! I’m very pleased with the way they look, they smell delicious. I have celiac disease so I couldn’t taste them. But I’m sure they’re gonna be good.

I always go to your page for this recipe & make it several times a year (in lemon flavor vs orange). I have also done this with strawberry and orange. All loved, of course, but lemon takes the crown!
