The Best Slow Cooker Bread

Homemade bread smells and tastes delicious. Generally, I am used to recipes where it takes hours to rise and rest the dough before baking the bread. Surprisingly with this recipe, all of the baking is done in the crock pot. It’s like magic! Slice this bread for sandwiches, toast, or finally as a simple side dish. It’s so soft and develops a crust on the outside similar to when baked. The exception is that you don’t need to give the dough time to rise. The active dry yeast is plenty for this method! It’s the perfect, easy white bread recipe with a subtle sweetness that you will want to make over and over.

What You’ll Need

These 7 ingredients are all you need to make the best and easiest crockpot bread recipe ever.

  • Active dry yeast: This is key when making bread. Using active dry yeast also will help it rise faster.
  • Sugar: White granulated sugar is used in this recipe. It’s one of my most important ingredients when baking.
  • Water: Warm water helps to rehydrate and activate the yeast to make it fluffy when it cooks.
  • Honey: This adds a subtle extra sweetness to the bread recipe. I use regular honey to keep the recipe as simple as possible!
  • Flour: Bread flour can be used but I used all-purpose flour for this bread in the crock pot.
  • Oil: Any type of oil will work. Vegetable oil and olive oil are typically my go-tos because they are the ones I consistently have in my kitchen.
  • Salt: This is always used in baked goods to balance the sweetness and bring out the other flavors.

How To Make Crock Pot Bread

Here are all of the steps needed to get your bread dough set up in your slow cooker! It’s such a quick and easy process.

  • Line the slow cooker. Place a large piece of parchment paper into the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Combine yeast and water. Mix the yeast and warm water in a large bowl.
  • Bloom. Allow the yeast to sit and bloom for about 10 minutes.
  • Add remaining ingredients. Gently stir in the rest of the ingredients until it starts to form a dough.
  • Knead the dough. Remove the bread dough from the bowl and place it on more parchment or a floured surface. Knead for 5 minutes.
  • Shape the dough. Carefully shape the dough into a ball and place it in the slow cooker.
  • Cook. Cover and cook on high for 2 hours.
  • Cool. Remove the bread and let it cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.
  • Serve. Enjoy with butter or to accompany your favorite meal.

Serving Suggestions

Spread Instant Pot Cherry Jam or Strawberry Butter on this slow cooker bread. Toast it or keep it soft.

Use a couple of slices to soak up the broth of your favorite soup! I recommend French Onion soup and Minestrone.

It’s great with pasta dishes too such as Crockpot Chicken Alfredo and Creamy Shrimp Pasta.

Tips for Success

  • Use a loaf pan. Instead of parchment paper, you can place the ball of dough into a loaf pan before placing it in the slow cooker. Be sure that the pot has enough room before you decide to use the pan.
  • Brown in the oven. If you want more color on your Crock Pot bread, place it under the broiler in the oven for a few minutes to brown the top a bit more.
  • Minimize dough handling. Try not to overwork the dough. It may cause the bread texture to be a little tough.
  • Add other flavors: Shredded cheese and herbs can be added to the dough recipe. I love adding parmesan, garlic powder, and parsley for a savory twist.
