These French Onion Sloppy Joes are a fun twist on traditional soppy joes featuring caramelized onions, ground beef and French onion soup mix.

French Onion Sandwiches
This recipe is simple to make and the slow cooker does all the work! This is a classic french dip flavor combined with a classic sloppy joe recipe for the perfect dinner dish. You combine onions, beef broth, ground beef, seasonings, and a few extra ingredients into a crockpot to slow cook to perfection.
Ingredients Needed
- Ground Beef: I prefer using lean ground beef along with beef broth and beefy onion soup mix for extra flavor.
- Oatmeal: Use quick-cooking oatmeal to thicken up the recipe.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This will add a smokey and savory flavor.
- Seasonings: You will need garlic and black pepper. You can use additional seasonings if you prefer.
- Provolone cheese: I use this, but you can try mozzarella cheese or Munster cheese
How To Make French Onion Sloppy Joes
- Cook the ground beef. Add the beef and onion into a large skillet and cook on medium heat until fully cooked through. Remove excess grease and place it into the slow cooker.
- Prepare the sauce. Place the oatmeal, beef broth, beefy onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper into the slow cooker and combine until fully incorporated.
- Cook in the slow cooker. Place the lid on top and cook for 3-4 hours on low. Place a few slices of cheese on top right before serving. Melt by covering it with the lid for 5 minutes. Serve on buns and enjoy!
What To Serve with French Onion Sloppy Joes
This is one of my favorite recipes because you can serve it on sandwiches with all sorts of sides or top of rice or mashed potatoes. I love this dish with fries, salads, bread, etc.
Tips & Tricks
- Storing – Place leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Added Flavor – Feel free to add some fresh garlic for a boost of flavor.
- Thickening – If the mixture is too hot or the mixture thickens too quickly, you can add about 1/2 cup of beef broth.
