The Best Millionaire Pie Recipe

I love this chilled millionaire pie. It’s a wonderful summer dessert that I like to make when it’s too hot to bake. It only takes a few minutes to whip it up and after you chill it, the texture of the filling is perfect. I wasn’t sure if I would be a fan when it was made for the first time, but I was impressed with how refreshing and sweet it was without feeling overindulgent. Even my kids like this pie and they prefer chocolate!

What is Millionaire Pie?

This is a well-known Southern dessert that originated in the 1950s. Its signature airy filling is full of tasty pineapple, maraschino cherries, and crunchy pecans. You may have also heard it called Billionaire Pie as well. There are no rules when it comes to this recipe — feel free to create your rendition!

Why You’ll Love This Millionaire Pie

  • Easy no-bake dessert. This is a simple recipe with minimal steps, making it great to put together for a party!
  • Budget-friendly. These ingredients won’t break the bank.
  • Prepare it ahead. I like making this pie the night before since it needs chilling time, so it’s ready when I need it.

What You’ll Need

This may be a very simple pie with subtle flavors but it’s a delightful Southern dessert that’s worth making. Plus, most of the ingredients may be purchased ahead or in bulk since they are pantry items!

  • Coconut flakes: I like the addition of sweetened coconut flakes to the pie filling for flavor and texture. It tastes great with the pineapple!
  • Crushed pineapple: Ensure that you drain all of the juice from the can. The extra liquid will make the pie runny.
  • Maraschino cherries: I like the pops of sweetness from these cherries. They go well with the pineapple and coconut. I save some for garnish and I add a little bit of juice to the filling, too.
  • Pecans: Chopped pecans add great texture as well! They provide a subtle crunch in every bite.
  • Condensed milk: This is an essential ingredient not just for sweetness but stability. It will help your millionaire pie set up in the refrigerator.
  • Lemon juice: This adds a little bit of acidity for balance.
  • Whipped topping: To give this pie it’s signature creamy texture, I fold in whipped topping. If you rather not use Cool Whip, make our easy homemade whipped cream.
  • Graham cracker crust: For convenience, I like to use a store-bought graham cracker crust instead of a homemade graham cracker crust made with melted butter and graham cracker crumbs. It’s perfect for no-bake pies.

How To Make Millionaire Pie

Most of the work involved is stirring ingredients for the pie filling. It only takes a few minutes. Then, the refrigerator chills the pie so it may properly set before you serve it!

  • Combine the filling ingredients. Add the coconut, pineapple, cherries, pecans, sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice, and cherry juice to a large bowl. Mix with a rubber spatula until all the ingredients are well combined.
  • Fold in the whipped topping. Add the whipped topping and gently fold it into the mixture.
  • Transfer and garnish. Pour the filling into the graham cracker pie crust. Top with more maraschino cherries and whipped topping.
  • Chill, then serve. Refrigerate the millionaire pie for at least 3 hours or overnight if possible. Slice and enjoy!

Tips for Success

  • Don’t freeze it. When thawed, this pie releases too much liquid and becomes a little runny and thin. I recommend enjoying it within a few days straight from the fridge.
  • Use diced pineapple. You may use diced pineapple instead of crushed for larger pieces. Ensure that you still drain the liquid from the can well.
  • Can I Skip the Lemon Juice? Lemon juice might seem like an odd ingredient, and you might be tempted to leave it out. However, it actually helps the pie filling set up, so be sure you don’t skip it. You can use fresh or bottled lemon juice.
  • Add more garnishes. You may also add more shredded coconut and chopped pecans on top right before serving.

I haven’t rated this one yet, but I’m am going to as soon as I can get to the store for the ingredients.

  2. Love this refreshing desert. I don’t care for condensed milk so I omit  it.  I do add  a layer of cream cheese (small pkg) mixed with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar between crust and cherry/ pineapple mixture. It is great!
