The Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make the Philly Cheesesteak Casserole (the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the printable recipe card):

  • Butter – you can use salted or unsalted butter.
  • Ground beef – use a lean ground beef.
  • Salt
  • Peppers – green bell pepper, red and yellow.
  • Cream cheese – use regular full-fat cream cheese.
  • Beef broth
  • Mozzarella cheese – you will use this for the beef mixture.
  • Olive oil
  • Bell peppers – use any color bell peppers you like.
  • Onion – we used a sweet Vidalia onion.
  • Garlic
  • Provolone cheese – we like to use sliced provolone because it melts really well on top of the casserole.

How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

  • Preheat the oven to 350F. Spray a 9×9-inch casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray; set aside.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, salt, and pepper. Use a wooden spoon to crumble the ground beef and cook, stirring often, until fully browned. Drain off the excess fat.
  • Add the cream cheese and beef broth to the cooked beef and cook until the cream cheese is melted. Stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese. Pour the ground beef mixture into the prepared casserole dish.
  • Add the olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium heat. Add the sliced bell peppers and onion. Cook until softened, then and garlic and cook for an additional minute. Scoop the mixture over the meat mixture in the casserole baking dish.
  • Top the casserole with provolone cheese slices.
  • Bake the casserole for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the casserole is hot and bubbling with a light golden brown.
  • Serve the casserole hot with a salad and garlic bread.

Tips and Variations

  • Feel free to add other cheeses and vegetables including mushrooms, cheddar cheese, monterey jack, etc… Whatever you prefer.
  • Replace the ground beef with sliced steak or grilled chicken. Ground chicken or ground turkey can also be used.
  • Add in some starch like brown rice, egg noodles or cauliflower rice.
  • We also love to use this casserole like a “dip” and serve with tortilla chips.

How to Store Leftover Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Keep the leftover cheesesteak casserole in an airtight food storage container. It will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to three days.

How to Reheat this Casserole

Reheat this casserole on the stove in a skillet over medium heat or in the oven at 350F until hot. Sometimes it’s easier (and faster!) to reheat individual portions in the microwave, but if heating more than one serving, I prefer to reheat the casserole in a skillet on the stove.
