The Best Homemade Guacamole Recipe

I can be picky about guacamole. I don’t enjoy many of the store-bought varieties because they don’t have that fresh homemade flavor I’m looking for. So, I decided it was time to try to make it myself and I hit the jackpot with this recipe. It’s creamy but a little chunky and has great flavor from the garlic and cilantro. I add a touch of fresh jalapeno for a little kick of heat that isn’t overpowering. Tie it all together with a zing of fresh lime and you truly have the best guacamole recipe this side of heaven.

Why You’ll Love This Guacamole Recipe

  • Simple recipe: This recipe calls for easy-to-find, fresh ingredients.
  • Ready in a few minutes: It takes less than 15 minutes to put this guacamole together.
  • Crowd pleaser: This is a shareable, easy guacamole recipe that you are going to want to share! It’s perfect for parties and everyone always says this is the best guacamole recipe they have ever had.

Recipe Ingredients

This recipe calls for the freshest produce. Many of these are kitchen staples or inexpensive.

  • Avocados: Make sure you use ripe avocados , but not mushy. They should have a little give when you gently squeeze them. Place them in a paper bag overnight to speed up the ripening process.
  • Plum tomatoes: Roma or plum tomatoes are my favorite variety for guacamole but you can use your favorite slicing tomato instead.
  • White onion: Make sure the onion is chopped finely. I love the flavor but not huge pieces. Yellow or red onion would work as well. Red onion has a sweeter flavor and less bite than white or yellow.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic adds great flavor to guacamole.
  • Jalapeño: This needs to be finely diced as well. I remove the seeds and membranes to tame the heat but if you love spice, leave it in.
  • Cilantro: I love cilantro and it goes beautifully with all of the other flavors in this easy guac recipe.
  • Lime: I juice a whole lime for my guac, but you can adjust the amount to taste. Craving more lime? Add a little bit of zest, too!
  • Salt: This is also to taste. I find a good pinch of salt goes a long way.

How to Make Guacamole

It only takes a few easy steps to make the best guacamole recipe!

  • Prepare the avocados. Slice, peel, and remove the pits from the avocados and place in a large bowl.
  • Add lime juice and mash. Juice half a lime and add it to the avocado flesh. Mash until smooth using a mortar and petestal, I find that a good potato masher can also work well for this step.
  • Add remaining ingredients. Combine with the remaining prepared ingredients and mix until combined.
  • Add salt to taste. Sprinkle salt to taste and more lime juice if desired.
  • Serve. Enjoy with tortilla chips.

Serving Suggestions

  • Chips: Serve alongside fajitas and burritos with your favorite tortilla chips or make your own Air Fryer Tortilla Chips.
  • Tacos: This is the perfect topping for tacos and nachos. Try this homemade guacamole with Chicken Street Tacos or Carne Asada Tacos.
  • Salads: It’s great for salads, too. I recommend Doritos Taco Salad or Cobb Salad.

How To Store Guacamole

Storing your leftover guacamole can be quite a challenge due to its quick oxidation process. Fresh lime juice helps slow down this browning process to some extent, but eventually, leftover guacamole will start to turn brown.

Various kitchen hacks have been tried to maintain guacamole’s green color, with mixed results. One common misconception is that leaving the avocado pit in the guacamole prevents browning, but there is no proof this works, it’s more of a myth.

Adding lemon juice can preserve guacamole’s color, although it can alter the flavor profile of the guacamole, which may not be desirable for some people.

The most commonly recommended method involves placing plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to limit its exposure to air and oxidation, this can work for a day or two,

A better way of keeping guacamole green can be done with the following steps:

  1. Transfer the leftover guacamole into a storage container, pressing it down firmly with a spoon to create a flat surface on top.
  2. Pour approximately 1/2 inch of cold water over the guacamole in the container.
  3. Seal the container with its lid and store it in the refrigerator.

When ready to enjoy the guacamole again, simply pour off the water from the top, give the guacamole a quick stir, and it’s ready to be served. This method can maintain the guacamole’s freshness and flavor for 2 to 3 days, although it may start to become slightly watery after prolonged storage.
