Better Than Anything Cake Recipe

Better Than Anything Cake is a chocolate lover’s dream! I put my spin on the topping and added instant chocolate pudding, which makes it extra rich and creamy – and bursting with chocolate flavor. It’s definitely worth the extra step. Poke cakes can be fun and creative. They add an extra level of flavor! I highly recommend that you try Strawberry Poke Cake and Andes Mint Poke Cake, too.

Since this recipe is made using a boxed mix, it comes together quickly and easily. It’s perfect for special occasions, parties, or when you just want to indulge in a tasty dessert. That’s right; you don’t need a reason to make this cake!

Better Than Anything Cake vs. Better Than Sex Cake

This chocolate poke cake with condensed milk is referred to as a Better Than Anything Cake, but you likely have heard it as Better Than Sex Cake. They’re the same thing! Traditionally, caramel sauce is combined with condensed milk, but I use chocolate syrup for extra chocolatey flavor. The names are used interchangeably, depending on who you ask. Sometimes the toppings change (I use Oreos), but they’re both a poke cake soaked with condensed milk and covered in whipped topping.

What You’ll Need

This only requires simple and easy-to-find ingredients. I love inexpensive desserts because then I don’t feel guilty about making them again and again. You should definitely keep this in your rotation for potlucks and special occasions.

Ingredients to make Better Than Anything Cake.

For the Cake

  • Devil’s Food Cake Mix: I love the rich flavor of devil’s food. You will use the package directions to prepare the cake. Use any brand that you prefer!
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: Make sure that you grab condensed milk and not evaporated milk.
  • Chocolate Syrup

For the Topping

  • Milk: I like to use whole milk, but you can also use 2%.
  • Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix
  • Chocolate Syrup: Reserve a little extra to drizzle over the top
  • Whipped Topping: Cool Whip is my go-to topping. The extra creamy is my favorite.
  • Crushed Oreos

How to Make Better Than Anything Cake

This is such a simple recipe to execute! Once baked, the other components are quick and easy to put together. Waiting is hard, but I promise that giving the cake time to set is worth it.

  • Make the Cake. Prepare the batter using the ingredients on the boxed cake mix and bake in the oven according to package directions. Set aside.
  • Make Condensed Milk Mixture. While baking, combine the sweetened condensed milk and chocolate syrup in a medium mixing bowl with a wooden spoon.
  • Poke and Pour. Using a fork, poke holes through the top. Pour the condensed milk evenly over the top.
  • Cool. Allow to cool completely before adding the topping, or it will melt.
  • Make the Topping. Whisk the whole milk and pudding mix in a large bowl until fully combined. Then, whisk in the chocolate syrup. Finally, gently fold in the whipped topping until completely mixed and there are no streaks.
  • Frost. Pour the whipped topping mixture over the top of the cooled cake. Smooth evenly.
  • Chill. Cover the pan and place the dessert in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours or overnight to set.
  • Serve. Top with crushed Oreos, and enjoy!

Can I Make It Ahead of Time?

Yes! Make this for up to 1 week before serving. Wrap it tightly and store it in your freezer. Make sure to thaw it completely before adding holes and toppings. You can also make the whole recipe up to 24 hours in advance so it has time to chill in the refrigerator before serving.

Recipe Variations

  • Cake: Feel free to use your favorite from-scratch chocolate cake recipe instead of box mix.
  • Topping: Instead of Oreos, you can sprinkle crushed Heath candy bars, snickers, chocolate chips, toffee bits, or anything else you can think of.
  • Pudding: I love chocolate on chocolate, but you can use vanilla pudding mix instead.
  • Whipped Topping: Use canned whipped cream or homemade whipped cream as a substitute.

Servings: 12 Servings

Cook: 33 minutes
Chill Time: 6 hours
Total: 6 hours 46 minutes

Ingredients

For the topping:

  • 1 & 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 5.9 ounce box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup plus more for serving
  • 16 ounces whipped topping
  • 20 crushed Oreos

Instructions

  • Mix and prepare the cake per the directions on the back of the box.
  • While the cake is baking, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and chocolate syrup until smooth.
  • Once the cake is done baking, start poking holes in it with a fork all over while still warm.
  • Drizzle the condensed milk mixture all over the cake, I like to take a spatula to move the filling around so it soaks into the holes of the cake and doesn’t all run off the sides.
  • Allow the cake to cool to room temperature.
  • Once the cake is cool, make the topping by whisking the whole milk and pudding mix until smooth.
  • Whisk in the chocolate syrup.
  • Whisk in the whipped topping a little at a time until fully mixed in with no streaks, it may be a little lumpy, but that’s okay.
  • Smooth the whipped topping mixture all over the cake; there is a lot, but use it all. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 6 hours to chill and set, even better overnight.
  • When ready to serve, top with the crushed Oreos. Serve slices with more chocolate sauce on top if desired.

Notes

Due to the whipped topping this needs to be stored in the refrigerator, I think it is also best eaten cold.

  1. I couldn’t find instant pudding. I used the cook and stir. And mixing the topping it was very thin. I’ll be trying it tonight. I hope it works.
