Funnel Cake Bites are a mini version of your favorite fair food. Small bites of fried dough covered in powdered sugar is a warm and delicious dessert.

I don’t think I can ever make these without thinking of Summer. They just scream carnival rides, flip flops and warm nights with friends. Are funnel cakes super nostalgic for you, too?

Funnel Cake Bites

I can very clearly remember how excited I would get when I saw the funnel cake truck at the summer carnival. It was by far my favorite part! The thought never would have crossed my mind that I could make this treat at home. I’m excited to share with you how to do it yourself!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Flour – All-purpose flour.
  • Baking Powder – add to the flour.
  • Salt – just a tiny bit.
  • Nutmeg and Cinnamon- for flavor.
  • Milk – whichever milk you’ve got on hand.
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla – real vanilla extract.
  • Granulated Sugar – for baking.
  • Powdered Sugar – to coat the cake in.
  • Vegetable Oil – for frying.

How To Make Funnel Cake

  1. Beat the eggs until they are nice and foamy. Then pour in the milk and stir.
  2. Add in the dry ingredients and stir until you get a dough.
  3. Heat oil in the pan and drop spoon fulls of batter into the oil.
  4. Cook on both sides until golden brown then dry on a paper towel and toss in powdered sugar.

Because they are fried, these are best served fresh and eaten right away. If you leave them out they get soggy and lose the crunch that makes them so good. Feel free to use as much powdered sugar as you want. It’s what makes the cake bites so delicious!

These are super tasty as is, but you can also dip them in chocolate or caramel sauce, too!

They have a great taste but it does not have the consistency to be a round ball. Delish.

  3. Adelina Alvarez says:

I made the funnel cake bites but my batter was very watery. I followed the recipe to the T. Flavor was good, but they were NOT pretty or round like your photo. It was for a birthday boy and I did not dare give him those hideous looking things. ????

    1. Jill says:

Hi Adelina. Sorry they were not as pretty as you would have liked them. That is the tricky part as far as batter thickness and oil temperature. Not sure why your batter was watery, but if you try this again, add the milk last and only a little at a time until you get the desired consistency. Also, make sure your oil is at 375 before dropping the batter in.

How can you tell how hot the oil is in the pot. I’m looking forward to trying it

Deep fryer is the easiest but a candy Thermometer works well also

  5. Jenn Saunders says:

I think I might try this in my aebleskiver pan so I can avoid the frying.

Hi! I want to try this recipe but I don’t deep fry so I was wondering if these could be done in an air fryer? Thanks!

    1. Jill says:

Hi Pam. I haven’t tried these in the air fryer but it should work. You may have to experiment on a few at first for the correct time.

  7. Debbie says:

It makes it so much easier if the ingredients are listed in the order used, instead of having to scan the list. I will be trying soon.

  8. Cheryl Sturm says:

A place near us makes these bigger with jelly filling inside…how would u do that??

    1. Linda says:

You use a piping bag and nozzle to push inside them once they are cooked

    2. Joanne says:

Use an electric Aeblskiver..out in 1 tBSP of batter, then dallop the jelly, then top with batter. Easy and less messy. google recipes & video and you will see a tutorial

  9. Theresa klan says:

I just made these but they were more like funnel cakes than they were the balls. They had good flavor and I followed the recipe exact so I don’t know what I did to mess them up. You have two different recipes on there the front one on the cover then you have another one so I followed the one where it says jump to recipe at and they were just too liquefied to turn into balls I added two cups of flour like the recipe said and I’m not sure what I messed up.
