Red Velvet Sugar Cookies with Chocolate Hearts

Red Velvet is such a unique flavor and makes the sugar cookies so much better! Topped on these adorable cookies is a chocolate heart that is perfect for showing your love to whoever you want this Valentine’s Day. These cookies are great and simple to make if you are needing a last-minute recipe!

Key Ingredients You Need

  • Butter: It is best to use unsalted butter for this recipe. Using unsalted butter will give you control of the flavoring in the recipe. This will allow the rawest and natural flavor to come out in the recipe.
  • Light Brown Sugar: This is great for adding more moisture to the cookie. We all love a chewy and delectable cookie, and this ingredient will do just that.
  • Granulated Sugar: In addition to adding a sweeter flavor to a cookie recipe. Granulated sugar caramelizes and absorbs moisture which overall improves the texture and flavor of the cookie.
  • Eggs: When making cookies, you always want to use room-temperature eggs. It gives the best texture to cookies and helps to prevent cracking.
  • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla is used not only to add an aroma to the recipe but also to enhance the flavor as well for a sweeter and more delicious recipe.
  • Food Coloring: Be sure to use food coloring gel and not the liquid form to make it blend easier into the ingredients. Use a drop to a couple of drops to make the desired color of the recipe.
  • All-Purpose Flour: All-purpose flour is best to use.  However, if you are using self-rising flour, you would eliminate the soda powder.
  • Baking Soda: Baking soda will help the cookies rise in the oven. This will make your cookies light and fluffy.

How To Make Sugar Cookies with Candy Hearts

Step 1. Set the oven to 350 degrees and use parchment paper to line two cookie sheets. Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt into a medium bowl and combine.

Combining the dry ingredients.

Combine the butter, brown sugar, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and red food coloring into a standing mixer until fluffy.

Adding the food coloring into the bowl.

Slowly add the dry ingredients until it forms a dough. In a small bowl, add in the red sanding sugar.

Step 2. Scoop the dough using a tablespoon and roll it into a ball. Place into the sugar and roll to coat. Arrange the cookies onto the prepared sheets, about 12 per pan.

Step 3. Place into the oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are set. Take out of the oven and allow it to rest for 1 minute before setting a chocolate heart into the middle of the cookie. Let cool thoroughly before serving.

How To Store Red Velvet Sugar Cookies?

Place the cookies into an airtight container. You can place the cookies into the fridge or leave them at room temperature. The cookies can also be stored in the freezer to last even longer.

Can I Use Other Candy For These Cookies?

Yes, you can use any type of candy you want. I prefer using candy hearts, especially around Valentine’s Day. However, you can use Hershey kisses, Mini Reese’s Cups, and more.
