What is a Dump Cake?

A ‘dump cake’ is a cake using ingredients that are literally dumped in a baking dish together. There is no mixing required, and no extra dirty dishes or mixing bowls have to be cleaned. Usually, fruit or canned fruit is used as the base. Top with a boxed cake mix and a wet ingredient like melted butter. • Ground cinnamon – the extra cinnamon really makes the apple pie filling taste good!
  • Ground nutmeg – some nutmeg adds a little hint of spice to the apples.
  • Caramels – unwrap the caramels and cut each in half

I have a lot of numbness and burning in my hands so I used the caramel baking pieces and they worked perfectly. We have a family tradition of making a dump cake over hot coals when we are camping. We haven’t been able to camp for the last few years so I made this last night for a family dinner. It was delicious and brought back many happy memories of sitting around a campfire eating dump cakes. I think I might try making this again using spice cake.

    1. Jill says:

So glad it brought back those camping memories Melody! Thanks!

  2. Linda Wachtel says:

Hi, since apples are in season, can we use fresh apples instead of canned filling?

    1. Jill says:

Hi Linda. Yes, you could use fresh apples as well! Try our apple pie filling recipe and add that to the dump cake.

Is there a sugar free version of the cake?

    1. Jill says:

Hi B U Kidd. You could use a no sugar added apple pie filling and sugar free caramels?

This was amazing!! I did cut my caramels into 4 pieces instead of 2 and I added chopped pecans on top for the last 20 minutes of cooking. The toasted pecan flavor really put this over the top!!

      Thank you Mary!

the cake is very good, but leave out the caramel candy pieces. They get too hard and chewy. I swirl the thick caramel ice cream topping into the apples instead and worked out wonderfully.

    1. Jill says:

      Thanks Deb!

    2. Mary says:

I just cut the caramels up smaller and it worked out very well!
