Ingredients You Will Need:

One thing love about this sugar cookie recipe is that it uses almond extract. And if you’re an experienced baker, you know that almond extract and cherries are the perfect match.

  • Butter – we use unsalted butter in this recipe to control the amount of salt.
  • Sugar – you will need light brown sugar.
  • Egg – only 1 egg is needed.
  • Flavor – vanilla and almond extract are used for the perfect flavor.
  • Pink gel food – this is optional, but we highly recommend for the pretty color.
  • Dry ingredients – all-purpose flour, baking soda and salt.
  • Cherries – Maraschino cherries work best.
  • Chocolate chips – we use semi-sweet chocolate chips, but milk or dark chocolate can also be used.

Tips and Tricks

  • Drain the maraschino cherries very well, so you do not add any extra liquid to the cookie dough.
  • Use paper towels to absorb the extra juice. Do this before and after dicing them.
  • Place extra chocolate chips to the tops of the warm cookies after baking them for bakery style cookies.

Can I Freeze Cherry Chocolate Chip Cookies?

After you have baked these cookies, you can move them to a freezer bag to freeze them. You can also freeze the cookie dough batter. Freeze the batter as a whole batch, but you can also freeze the cookies as dough balls. Scoop the cookie dough and then freeze it on a plate. Once you have it frozen, you can move the dough balls to the freezer.

Can I Use Fresh Cherries in These Cookies?

Fresh cherries would be hard to use in this recipe because of the pits however, you could take the pits out and make these cookies with fresh cherries. You can also use frozen cherries if you prefer them to the canned maraschino cherries.
