Peanut Butter Balls with Rice Krispies

We all love a good Rice Krispie treat, so these Peanut Butter Balls with Rice Krispies are a fun take on that classic. They’re like a mashup between traditional peanut butter balls and Rice Krispie treats that make it a crave-worthy sweet, crunchy, creamy snack.

The Ingredients

(the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the easy to print recipe card):

  • Creamy peanut butter – crunchy peanut butter also works well.
  • Butter – use regular salted butter
  • Powdered sugar – powdered sugar adds sweetness to the peanut butter filling and helps turn it into a sort of dough to be rolled into balls. Be sure not to use regular granulated sugar, which will not give good results in this recipe.
  • Rice Krispies cereal – slightly crush the cereal before adding it to the recipe.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – we like the flavor of semi-sweet chocolate and it doesn’t burn quickly when melting, but any chocolate you like will work well. Remember, white chocolate and milk chocolate are notoriously fickle and can be difficult to melt without burning.
  • Vegetable shortening – the shortening helps thin the chocolate and give it just the right texture for dipping.

Dip the chilled peanut butter balls into the melted chocolate and place back on the cookie sheet. Chill until the chocolate is firm.

Tip: I had extra chocolate left over, so I drizzled a bit over top of the peanut butter chocolate balls to make a pretty pattern. You can even do this with a different type of chocolate for a pretty contrast.

The finished candies are very firm when you take them out of the refrigerator, so if you prefer them to be soft, allow them to sit on the counter at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

How To Package for Gifting:

These peanut butter balls make a great gift! Here are some ideas:

Box – Line a small cardboard gift box with parchment paper and fill the box with the candies. Add the top of the box and tie closed with a ribbon. Add a card and it’s ready for gift giving.

Mug – Fill a pretty mug with the chocolate peanut butter candies and add a packet of hot cocoa and maybe a coffee shop gift card. Wrap the mug with clear gift wrap and tie up with a ribbon.

Gift Tin – Line a cookie tin with parchment paper, fill with the Peanut Butter Balls with Rice Krispies, cover with the lid, and attach a note.

Plate – Buy a plate from a dollar store or use a plate you already have that you do not need to be returned. Arrange the peanut butter balls on the plate and wrap with cellophane, add a bow, and add a notecard. Be sure to indicate that the plate is a part of the gift.

My granddaughter is 12 years old and she made these by herself. We love it and are taking some to our family for thanksgiving.

  2. I’m making these now and thought to sub some of the Peanut butter for Biscoff spread and reduce powdered sugar a bit since biscoff is sweet. Will report back with how they turn out.

Update: they passed my son’s taste test! I also added some crushed biscoff biscuits into the mixture. Dipped in melted Lindor 70% chocolate balls. Drizzled white chocolate over the set balls and sprinkled with silver sanding sugar for a pretty glittery look! 5 stars!

These will become a regular in my gift boxes. Thank you for the recipe. I used butterscotch to dip some. They were a huge hit.

    1. Hi Jennifer. It’s basically a solid form of vegetable oil. Crisco is probably the most popular brand. You can also substitute butter for the shortening.

Easy peasy recipe! I put mine in the freezer for 10 minutes after the 30 minute frig to ensure they would not fall apart when I dipped them. Worked great.

    1. Love making these. Both my son and boyfriend are excited when I make it. Just curious… what’s the nutrition information, calories etc?

I haven’t done these in over twenty years and made them just recently, they were a huge hit with my family again and the people at work loved them as well

Rolling of the peanut butter mixture to make balls was very messy and difficult. I spread powdered sugar out on a clean cookie sheet, powdered my hands well, and every few balls would repeat. This made the process go much faster and neater!

    1. Try refrigerating dough 1-2 hours then roll into balls. I have done it this way for years

  7. Chunky peanut butter and don’t crush the rice crispiest. Also, because I became allergic to chocolate, I make some with white chocolate!

DELICIOUS! I had my Culinary Students (High school) make these. They loved them. We only needed 1 1/4 cups of chocolate chips though and still had plenty left to even do some “drizzly” designs on top.

I  also add some coconut to mine and use coconut oil instead of vegetable oil. Either way they are delicious.

  10. The full recipe is in the recipe box at the bottom of every post. There is a “jump to recipe” button at the top of each post to make it easy to get to.

    1. My mix isn’t allowing me to form balls….what do I need to add so they will stick and roll into balls? More Rice Krispies or powered sugar?

    2. Hi Krista. Sorry to hear that. Without knowing exactly what happened, you may want to try adding a little of both until you get the desired consistency.
