The Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make Sloppy Joe Dip (the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the easy to print recipe card):

  • Extra-lean ground beef – the ground beef is the base of this recipe, so use a good quality very lean ground beef.
  • Onion
  • Green bell pepper
  • Fresh garlic – freshly minced garlic is the best, but you could also use minced garlic from a jar if you prefer.
  • Flour – all-purpose flour is used to thicken the dip.
  • Brown sugar – the sugar adds a hint of sweetness and helps cut the acidity from the ketchup.
  • Dijon mustard
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper – this ingredient is optional, but allows you to give the dip just the right amount of kick.
  • Chicken broth – to reduce the salt content of the dip, you can use a low sodium chicken broth.
  • Ketchup – any ketchup you like will work in this recipe.
  • Finely shredded cheddar cheese – finely shredded cheese will melt quickly on top of the hot dip. Set the cheese out on the counter for 30-60 minutes before you add it to the recipe to give it time to warm up to room temperature.

Tips for Making Sloppy Joe Dip

What to do if the dip seems greasy:

It’s very important to use a very lean ground beef and drain off any excess fat after the beef is browned. This should avoid the issue of the dip being greasy, but if you still have this issue, simply use a spoon to scoop off any excess fat or use a piece of bread to sop up the grease.

What to do if the dip is too thin:

If after simmering the dip it still seems too thin/watery, continue simmering the dip until the moisture has reduced and the dip is thickened. Be sure you cook the sloppy joe dip uncovered.

Making the dip in advance:

This sloppy joe dip is perfect as a make-ahead appetizer. Simply follow the cooking directions below, then refrigerate the dip for up to three days before serving. Reheat in a pot on the stove over medium heat, or in the microwave on high heat, stirring often.

How to Store Leftovers

Keep the leftover sloppy joe dip in an airtight food storage container and refrigerate for up to three days. Reheat the dip in the microwave on high heat, stirring every 30-60 seconds, until hot.

  1. 5 stars
Super yummy. I think the only thing I would do differently is to add the brown sugar a tablespoon at a time just to cut the sweetness to our own preference, it’s a terrific recipe that I see us using time and time again. Thank u.

Just fixed this sloppy Joe dip for the super bowl and followed recipe to the tee. The taste was spot on but the color was not red in the least. More gray in color, so not appealing to look at. Wife laughed at me. Yes she’s cooking too.

  3. I think I’ll use beef stock, give it a more beefy taste than chicken broth. Ever try it that way ? Thanx for the recipe we’ll have it on New Years !
