How To Make White Bread Recipe

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar in 2 1/4 cups of warm water; let stand until bubbles form on the surface. Whisk together remaining 3 tablespoons sugar, salt, and 3 cups flour. Stir canola oil into yeast mixture; pour the yeast mixture into flour mixture and beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to form a soft dough.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 8-10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, 1-1/2 to 2 hours.

Rising Bread Dough

  • Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide dough in half. Shape each into a loaf. Place in 2 greased 9×5-in. loaf pans. Cover and let rise until doubled, 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Whisk the egg and water. Brush the loaves thoroughly with egg mixture.

Punching Rising Bread Dough

Can You Freeze This Bread?

YES! The frozen slices reheat exceptionally well – just 20 seconds in the microwave is all they need.

Tips:

Substitute honey for the sugar (use the same amount called for).

Melted butter can be substituted for oil.

This will make 2 loaves using a 9×5 loaf pans.

In place of Canola oil can you use vegetable oil?

This sounds so simple – I don’t keep canola oil on hand, would EVO or Avocado oil work? If not I have butter I think.

I have a bread making machine. Do I put all the ingredients in at one time?

We are sheltering in place (Bay Area, mandatory) and I have all purpose flour but not bread flour. Will this work?5 stars

Hi. I used to make Yeast bread years ago With all purpose flour and it worked fine. Maybe the bread flour results in a better consistency, but not absolutely necessary.

I’m sure this will be easy and taster fantastic. Hope to find bread flour. Last I heard at our Walmart there were police ,not security, police, guarding the toilet paper , flour, cleaning supplies, and pasta !
Wow! 5 stars

How much yeast in this recipe?
Thanks!

A small package of yeast typically holds 2.25 teaspoons of yeast.

Can you use all purpose flour?

I am diabetic, can I use a sugar substitute instead of regular sugar, honey ?

Bake until golden  brown?  Any advice on approximately long that might be?

It took us awhile to realize how much yeast was really needed here.  It would be helpful if there was some sort of punctuation between and 1 and 1/4.  At first we thought we needed a total of 1 and 1/4 ounces of yeast instead of one packet that was 1/4 ounce!
