How to make hard boiled eggs in the oven and why this method is our favorite! It is super easy and is totally fool-proof. The eggs come out perfect every time!

Hard Boiled Eggs in the Oven

We have used hard boiled eggs in lots of recipes here and I love baking them in the oven. My favorite part is when you are making them to go inside something like a potato salad, you don’t have to watch over a boiling pot while you are multi-tasking.

How To Hard Boil Eggs In The Oven

My guess is that you’ll be like me and never actually boil hard boiled eggs again after you try it this way. The very best part about it, is that you can simply place them in the oven and not have to worry about it.

Another thing I love about this method, is that the eggs don’t burst open like they often do in hot boiling water.

Peeled Eggs

There is virtually no prep time with this, just grab your eggs and a muffin pan. You could, in theory, use any baking dish but the muffin pan works perfectly to keep the eggs separate and not roll around.

Place one egg in each of the muffin tin slots and place into a 325 degree preheated oven. That’s it!

You’ll bake somewhere between 20-30 minutes, depending on the doneness you prefer. I like a very “hard” boiled egg so I go the full half an hour. If you like a more soft boiled egg, you can take a few minutes off the baking time.

Here is a guide for you to save.

How To Peel A Hard Boiled Egg

My number one tip for peeling a hard boiled egg is to do an ice bath. Grab a large bowl, fill it with cold, ice water and drop the eggs inside when they are done cooking. This is super helpful for getting them to peel easier.

After that, I like the “tap and roll” technique.

  1. Tap the egg (gently) several times on both sides on your counter.
  2. Roll the egg across the counter with the palm of your hand.

Then, start peeling away. Don’t be too worried about tiny pieces left because you can just rinse them off.

Thank you, I love the simplicity of leaving in the oven for 30 minutes, I prefer a harder boiled egg, and they come out pretty perfect

I have to boil eggs often and usually in a large quantity (2-3 dozen at a time!) and this is the only way I cook them! So much easier than boiling and peeling is never an issue!

I did everything exactly, was very impressed on how easy they were to peel. But I used white eggs, when took them out of oven they all have specked brown spots on the shells, and when I peeled them, all of them have 3-4 dark brown spots on them. I tasted one, and seems to taste ok with just a small taste of burnt. Could the eggs be bad? Or is this normal? Afraid to use them for Christmas dinner, not wanting to make everyone sick???

    1. Hi Teresa. I think your eggs are fine and it’s unlikely they are bad as the brown spots can happen sometimes using this method. All ovens are slightly different and baking times can vary. Next time you can try to place the eggs in ice water to stop the cooking process.

  4. There is no mention of placing the eggs in ice water to stop further cooking. Normally I would do this when boiling eggs. Is this not necessary?

    1. Hi Anna. It isn’t necessary to place them in ice water after cooking but it may help if you are looking to use them quickly.

Nice hack! I used my small toaster oven, and it even turned itself off at the allotted time!

  6. My eggs had brown pots on the shell. When i peeled It the brown spots were on the egg white. They tastes fine. What did I do wrong.

    1. Hi Peggy. That does happen sometimes with this method. You could try a little less time in the oven to see if that helps.

It worked! I didn’t have access to water and a stove top. I did this in the toaster oven. Very thankful!

  8. I’ve done this several times and I love it.

Unfortunately, the last step was left out. After they come out of the oven you need to put them in an ice cold water bowl. Easy to peel.

I found 30 minutes at 325 degrees perfect except I cook in muffin tin with cupcake paper , perfect every time

This was so easy to do. While my eggs still didn’t peel as nicely as I wanted I think I’ll try to get them closer to room temperature the next time before putting them in the oven. I didn’t struggle with the peel just some of the white came off so if making a perfect deviled egg it would have bothered me. Otherwise how nice and simple!

Missing how to peel after comes out of the oven and warning do not cook in the oven for longer than 30 minutes as they burn the brown spots. People are complaining about because they left it in the oven. One minute too long even.

  12. What this was great! The first time i tried it it was so easy but should have left them in 5 more minutes. Thank You i can not waite to make them again.
