The Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make the Homemade Salsa Recipe (the exact measurements and full recipe instructions are below in the easy to print recipe card):
- Roma tomatoes – you can use any tomatoes you like.
- Rotel – Rotel tomatoes with green chiles add so much to the flavor of this salsa.
- Green onions
- Red onion – if you don’t have a red/purple onion, use any other onion you like.
- Jalapeno pepper – to make the salsa spicier, add a whole pepper with the seeds. To make it mild, you can leave out the jalapeno or use half with the seeds and white ribs removed.
- Fresh cilantro – some people don’t enjoy the flavor of cilantro, so this ingredient can be left out.
- Clove garlic – fresh garlic is best for this recipe.
- Lime juice – we do strongly recommend that you use fresh-squeezed lime juice.
- Chili powder
- Ground cumin
- Granulated sugar – the sugar doesn’t really sweeten the salsa, it just helps cut the acidity of the tomatoes a bit.
- Salt and pepper to taste
How to Make the Homemade Salsa Recipe
Start by prepping all of the ingredients. I do the necessary peeling and chopping, then place everything in one bowl so it’s all ready for the food processor.
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until all ingredients are finely chopped and the salsa reaches your desired consistency.
Cover the salsa and refrigerate for 1 hour, then taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
Store the salsa in the refrigerator up to 1 week.
What to Serve with Homemade Salsa
- Tortilla chips for dipping – Scoops, restaurant-style tortilla chips, organic blue corn tortilla chips, etc.
- Tacos
- Taquitos
- Burritos
- Tostadas
- Queso – melt 8 ounces of white American cheese with 1/3 cup heavy cream and stir in some of the fresh salsa for a delicious queso dip.
How to Store Homemade Salsa
Keep the salsa in an airtight food storage container. Refrigerate for up to one week.
