Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

Homemade Tortilla Chips in the Air Fryer

I love homemade tortilla chips. They are thin, crunchy, and delicious! However, I’m not a fan of the excess oil that comes with deep frying. This recipe eliminates that. It’s possible to get the same result by cooking the tortillas in the air fryer.

This is also a great way to use leftover corn tortillas. I also seem to have extra lying around from previous meals and this recipe prevents waste! You can air fry them and enjoy them with your favorite dip or incorporate them into a whole new meal like Chicken Fajita Nachos.

Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

  • Gluten-free and vegan: Corn tortillas don’t include flour, lard, or any dairy products!
  • Only 3 ingredients: All you need are corn tortillas, cooking spray, and salt.
  • Quick and easy: From start to finish, this recipe takes only a few minutes.

Recipe Ingredients

With just 3 ingredients you can air fry tortilla chips at home! You will find measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Corn tortillas: Any brand or variety will work perfectly. I cut them into triangles to resemble chips. If you are not looking for a gluten/dairy-free recipe, flour tortillas can be used as well.
  • Olive oil cooking spray: This gives you a little bit of fat to help the chips get nice and crispy. Feel free to use vegetable or canola oil spray if it’s what you have on hand.
  • Salt: Add this to taste to add flavor to your air-fried tortilla chips.

How to Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

It’s so incredibly easy to make your tortilla chips at home with these easy-to-follow instructions. You’ll never buy store-bought chips again!

  • Preheat the air fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F.
  • Cut tortillas. Using a shark knife or pizza cutter, slice the tortillas into quarters. This should give you 4 triangles per tortilla.
  • Spray tortillas. Lightly spray both sides of each tortilla with the olive oil spray.
  • Season. Sprinkle salt over the top.
  • Air fry. Arrange them in a single layer in the air fryer. To det them crisp cook for 4-7 minutes depending on your families preferences, flipping halfway through. Repeat the process for any remaining chips.
  • Cool. Place the tortilla chips on a wire rack while they cool to ensure they stay crisp.
  • Serve. Enjoy as a garnish with your favorite meal or with a tasty dip!

Tips and Variations

  • Tortillas: Plain corn or flour tortillas are my go-to, but you can even use whole wheat, multigrain, or spinach-flavored if you like.
  • Brush oil: Don’t have cooking spray? Lightly brush the tortillas with olive oil before air frying.
  • Seasonings: Sprinkle different spices like chili powder or cayenne pepper powder for a kick, a ranch seasoning or add a sweet seasoning like a cinnamon sugar blend for a special treat.
  • Tortilla shape: Cut the tortillas into squares, strips, or any shape you like as long as they are all uniform so they cook evenly.

Storage of any leftover Homemade Tortilla Chips

Store leftover chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If they start to soften, crisp them up again in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 2-3 minutes.

Notes

Small Tortillas (Corn or Flour): The choice between corn and flour tortillas is totally up to you. Corn tortillas have a slightly nutty flavor and a firmer texture, while flour tortillas tend to have a softer bite. Corn tortillas or flour can be substituted with whole wheat or multigrain corn tortillas as well as spinach-flavored flour tortillas. I used corn tortillas for this air-fried tortilla chips recipe.
Olive Oil Cooking Spray: Using a little bit of oil or cooking spray helps promote
crispiness during the air frying process. You can also use canola oil or avocado oil
sprays on your flour or yellow corn tortillas.
Coarse Salt: Coarse salt not only enhances the natural flavors of these easy air fryer tortilla chips but also contributes to their overall texture. I used kosher salt, but you can use sea salt or Himalayan salt. If you like spicy chips, a sprinkle of different seasonings like chili powder or cayenne pepper will give your crispy tortilla chips a spicy kick.
